ISO 29022:2013 specifies a shear test method used to determine the adhesive bond strength between direct dental restorative materials and tooth structure, e.g. dentine or enamel. The method as described is principally intended for dental adhesives. The method includes substrate selection, storage and handling of tooth structure, as well as the procedure for testing.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 29022:2013 - "Dentistry - Adhesion - Notched-edge shear bond strength test" specifies a standardized shear test method to determine adhesive bond strength between direct dental restorative materials (principally dental adhesives) and tooth structure (dentine or enamel). The standard covers substrate selection, tooth storage and handling, specimen production, the notched-edge shear test apparatus and procedure, and requirements for recording and reporting results.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and intent: Designed mainly for dental adhesives and direct restorative materials; users should assess suitability for specific applications.
- Substrates: Use bovine incisors (labial surface) or human erupted permanent third molars (buccal/mesial/distal/lingual); avoid occlusal surfaces. Use superficial dentine close to the dentine–enamel junction.
- Tooth storage: Store extracted teeth in water (ISO 3696 grade 3) at (4 ± 4) °C; use within 6 months of extraction. Acceptable preservatives (e.g., 1% chloramine‑T) must not react with dentine.
- Surface preparation: Produce a flat, reproducible bonding surface under running water. Grind with P120 then P400 silicon carbide abrasive papers (or nearest grit equivalents) within 4 hours before bonding; keep surfaces wet to avoid dehydration effects.
- Specimen production: Prepare and test specimens at ambient conditions of (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 10) % RH. Precondition surfaces per manufacturer; if none, rinse 10 s and remove visible water. Apply adhesive per manufacturer’s instructions. Use a plastics button mould with hole diameter (2.38 ± 0.03) mm for composite placement; prepare 15 specimens for testing.
- Test apparatus & procedure: The notched-edge shear apparatus and detailed drawings are provided (Annex A). The method specifies shear loading, test execution, data recording and reporting procedures.
- Patent notice: ISO notes possible patent claims related to shear bond strength testing; users may need to consider licensing where applicable.
