ISO 2909:2002 describes two procedures for calculating the viscosity index (VI) of petroleum products and related materials, such as lubricating oils, from their kinematic viscosities at 40 °C and 100 °C. Procedure A is applicable to petroleum products of viscosity index up to and including 100. Procedure B is applicable to petroleum products of viscosity index 100 or greater. ISO 2909:2002 does not apply to petroleum products with kinematic viscosities less than 2,0 mm2/s at 100 °C. It applies to petroleum products with kinematic viscosities between 2 mm2/s and 70 mm2/s at 100 °C. Equations are provided for calculating the viscosity index of petroleum products having kinematic viscosities above 70 mm2/s at 100 °C.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2909:2002 - Petroleum products - Calculation of viscosity index from kinematic viscosity - defines standard procedures to calculate the viscosity index (VI) of petroleum products and related materials (for example, lubricating oils) from measured kinematic viscosities at 40 °C and 100 °C. The standard gives two calculation routes (Procedure A and Procedure B), instructs on use of tabulated reference values and equations, and sets rules for reporting and precision.
Key topics and requirements
- Input data: kinematic viscosity at 40 °C (U) and 100 °C (Y) determined in accordance with ISO 3104.
- Scope limits:
- Not applicable when kinematic viscosity at 100 °C is less than 2.0 mm2/s.
- Table-based values in ISO 2909 cover 2.0 to 70.0 mm2/s at 100 °C; equations are provided for higher viscosities.
- Two procedures:
- Procedure A (VI ≤ 100): obtain L and H (reference kinematic viscosities at 40 °C for VI = 0 and VI = 100 respectively) from Table 1 (interpolate if needed) or use the standard’s equations when Y > 70 mm2/s. Calculate VI using:
- VI = (L − U) / (L − H) × 100
- Procedure B (VI ≥ 100): obtain H from Table 1 (or equation if Y > 70 mm2/s), compute exponent n from logarithms of H, U and Y, then calculate VI using the standard’s logarithmic formula (clause 6.3.4).
- Rounding and expression: report VI to the nearest whole number; if exactly halfway, round to the nearest even integer (e.g., 115.5 → 116).
- Precision: the VI calculation itself is exact; overall precision depends on the repeatability/reproducibility of the two kinematic viscosity measurements (precision guidance references ISO 3104 and precision tables in ISO 2909).
Practical applications and users
- Quality control and acceptance testing in petroleum refining, lubricant manufacturing, and formulation.
- Laboratory technicians and test houses performing viscosity characterization and specifications.
- Product engineers, procurement and specification writers who need a standardized VI value for performance comparisons, storage, and cold-start behavior assessments.
- Regulatory, standards and R&D teams that require traceable, ISO-aligned VI calculations for product datasheets and specifications.
Related standards
- ISO 3104 - Determination of kinematic viscosity (referenced normative standard; required for measuring U and Y).
- ISO 2909 is commonly used alongside internal test methods and other lubricant/petroleum product standards for product specification and performance assessment.
