These cutters are equipped either with high speed steel inserted teeth or with inserted teeth with brazed carbide tips. Concerns milling cutters, arbor located, to be used with a well-defined spindle nose having a 7/24 taper and milling cutter, arbor located, to be used with both spindle nose No. 50 and spindle nose No. 60 having a 7/24 taper. Dimensions for centring arbors and fitting dimensions for fixation are given in ISO 2940-1.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 2940-2:1974 establishes international requirements for inserted tooth milling cutters mounted on centring arbors with a 7/24 taper. This standard, published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), covers both single and dual purpose mounting cutters equipped with either high speed steel inserted teeth or inserted teeth with brazed carbide tips. It ensures compatibility and interchangeability between milling cutters and machine spindle noses, streamlining operations in manufacturing environments that utilize standardized tooling systems.
Centring arbors and the fitting dimensions specified in ISO 2940-1 are referenced for consistency in assembly and operation. The standard is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and users of milling cutters and related equipment who require dependable, standardized interface dimensions and mounting solutions.
Key Topics
- Inserted Tooth Cutters: Covers cutters with high speed steel or carbide-tipped inserted teeth, enhancing versatility and performance in various milling operations.
- Mounting Types:
- Single Purpose Mounting: For cutters used with a specific spindle nose with a 7/24 taper.
- Dual Purpose Mounting: For cutters designed to fit both No. 50 and No. 60 spindle noses with a 7/24 taper.
- Dimension Standardization: Ensures that critical interface and mounting dimensions align with the specifications in ISO 2940-1, supporting tool interchangeability.
- Cutter Body Sizes:
- Single purpose cutters: Nominal cutting diameters from 160 mm to 630 mm.
- Dual purpose cutters: Diameters between 315 mm and 630 mm.
- Machine Spindle Compatibility: Specifies use with spindle noses Nos. 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60, all featuring a 7/24 taper.
- Fixation Details: Provides guidelines for optional features (such as reliefs and seatings) and tolerance requirements for proper mounting of milling cutters.
Applications
ISO 2940-2:1974 is broadly used across several industrial sectors where milling cutters with inserted teeth are required, particularly in metalworking, manufacturing, and mechanical engineering environments. Key applications include:
- Machining and Fabrication: Facilitates the efficient mounting of standardized milling cutters onto appropriately tapered spindle noses, ensuring precise alignment and consistent performance.
- Tooling Equipment Production: Assists manufacturers in producing cutters and assemblies that are compatible across a range of standardized machine tools.
- Maintenance and Repair Operations: Simplifies replacement and interchange of cutter heads, reducing downtime and stock complexity for machine maintenance teams.
- International Manufacturing Environments: Promotes global compatibility, enabling manufacturers and suppliers to cater to multinational clients and facilities with standardized equipment.
Related Standards
- ISO 2940-1: Provides the baseline fitting dimensions for centring arbors and mounting, to be used in conjunction with ISO 2940-2 for comprehensive compatibility.
- ISO/R 1101: Covers technical drawing standards, specifically tolerances of form and position, ensuring accurate communication of dimensional requirements.
- Other ISO Milling Standards: Additional standards within the ISO 2940 series, as well as related ISO norms for milling tools and arbors, maintain interoperability across tooling systems.
By implementing the guidelines in ISO 2940-2:1974, organizations benefit from improved compatibility, ease of replacement, and assurance of quality in milling operations involving inserted tooth cutters and centring arbors with 7/24 tapers.
