This document specifies methods to determine the mechanical integrity of filters under defined conditions that can be encountered in abnormal operating environments. It describes the test methods for filter elements, independent of any ageing procedures like pulsing, loading, temperature cycles, wet conditions or others. The test procedure is intended for filters operating in the range of 0,24 m3/s (850 m3/h) up to 2,36 m3/s (8 500 m3/h). Filter elements with a lower efficiency than ISO T5 (ePM10) according to ISO 29461-1 are excluded. To ensure the comparability of the test results, only new filter elements or those loaded up to 625 Pa or maximum 800 Pa according to ISO 29461-1 are tested. This document does not describe a standardized method to measure the fractional or gravimetric efficiency. The efficiency of the filter element can be tested according to ISO 29461-1. The performance results obtained according to this document cannot be quantitatively applied (by themselves) to predict performance in real use.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 29461-3:2024 – Air intake filter systems for rotary machinery - Test methods - Part 3: Mechanical integrity of filter elements – is an international standard developed by ISO. This document specifies standardized test methods to evaluate the mechanical integrity of air intake filter elements designed for rotary machinery such as turbines and compressors. The procedures are intended for filters operating within specific air flow rates, and are focused on replicating challenging, abnormal operating environments to ensure the durability and safety of filter designs before service.
The scope of ISO 29461-3:2024 does not cover aging effects such as pulsing, extended loading, or exposure to varying temperatures or wet conditions. Instead, it establishes a clear, reproducible methodology for stress-testing new or lightly loaded filter elements. This standard is applicable only to filter elements meeting or exceeding ISO T5 (ePM10) efficiency classification according to ISO 29461-1.
Key Topics
- Mechanical Integrity Testing: The standard defines laboratory-based procedures - often referred to as “burst tests” - to evaluate whether filter elements can withstand high differential pressure without failing structurally or releasing parts.
- Abnormal Operating Conditions: The tests simulate conditions exceeding normal operations, such as sudden spikes in pressure drop, to predict filter performance during rare but critical events.
- Air Flow Range Specifications: Only filters with rated air flows between 0.24 m³/s (850 m³/h) and 2.36 m³/s (8,500 m³/h) are addressed, making the standard particularly relevant for medium-to-large rotary machinery.
- Exclusion Criteria: Filters with efficiencies lower than ISO T5 (ePM10) are excluded, focusing the standard on higher-performance air intake filters.
- Testing of New or Lightly Used Elements: To ensure uniformity and comparability, only new filters or those with a dust loading pressure drop up to 800 Pa (according to ISO 29461-1) are tested.
- No Efficiency Measurement: The standard does not evaluate fractional or gravimetric filtration efficiency, which should be referenced in ISO 29461-1.
Applications
The practical applications of ISO 29461-3:2024 are significant for industries utilizing rotary machinery such as:
- Power Generation: Ensuring the reliability and extended life of turbines and compressors by verifying that air intake filters retain their mechanical integrity even in extreme conditions.
- Oil & Gas: Protecting sensitive rotary machinery operating in environments with high dust or moisture levels.
- Industrial Manufacturing: Safeguarding critical machinery against failure due to ingested contaminants under unpredictable environmental stresses.
By conforming to this standard, manufacturers and end-users can minimize the risk of catastrophic mechanical failure, unscheduled downtime, and operational inefficiencies caused by compromised filter elements. It also facilitates fair comparison and selection of filters based on standardized criteria across the global industry.

Summary
ISO 29461-3:2024 provides an essential, internationally recognized test protocol for verifying the structural robustness of air intake filter elements used in rotary machinery. Adoption of this standard enhances equipment reliability, safety, and operational performance in critical environments where filter integrity can be a key determinant of overall system stability. For industry professionals, adhering to ISO 29461-3:2024 demonstrates commitment to best practices in industrial air filtration and machinery protection.
