This document is the technical addition to the methodology set out in ISO 29481-1. It defines a specification to store, exchange and read information delivery manual (IDM) specifications in a standardized and machine-readable way.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 29481-3:2022 specifies a standardized, machine-readable data schema for Information Delivery Manuals (IDMs) defined by ISO 29481-1. Using an XML-based idmXML schema (idmXSD), the standard defines how to store, exchange and read IDM specifications-including metadata, revision history, supported project phases and detailed information requirements-to make IDM content searchable, sharable and reusable across BIM workflows and software tools.
Key Topics
- idmXML / idmXSD: Defines the XML schema for encoding IDM specifications in a SMART (machine-readable and transferable) format.
- Overall IDM structure: Naming conventions, restriction notation and the organization of IDM elements to ensure consistent interpretation.
- Authoring metadata: Specification identifier (specId), author, publisher, committee, and change-log support for lifecycle tracking.
- Use case modelling: Structured representation of use cases (aim, scope, actors, benefits, limitations, required resources and competencies).
- Business context map: Process, interaction and transaction mapping to link IDM requirements to business workflows.
- Exchange requirements: Information units, constraints, corresponding external elements and mapping to model view definitions (MVDs).
- IDM code generation rules: Rules for producing consistent IDM codes and identifiers.
- Informative annexes: idmXSD definition and IDM specification stages to guide implementation.
Applications and Practical Value
- Improves BIM interoperability by enabling standardized, machine-readable exchange of IDM specifications between software tools and stakeholders.
- Facilitates creation and reuse of IDMs for common BIM use cases (design, coordination, construction, handover, asset management).
- Supports automated validation, MVD mapping and tight digital links to external data definitions (for example IFC mappings and other schema).
- Useful for: BIM managers, information managers, software developers, standards committees, owners/clients, contractors, and facility managers who need consistent information delivery, traceability and automated workflows.
- Helps organizations implement ISO 29481-1 methodology in a digital, scalable way-reducing proprietary formats and manual rework.
Related Standards
- ISO 29481-1 (Methodology for IDM)
- ISO 16739-1 (IFC) - for linking IDM requirements to IFC entities
- ISO 19650 series (information management)
- ISO 23386 / ISO 23387 (semantic and data dictionaries)

By adopting ISO 29481-3:2022, organizations can standardize IDM authoring and exchange, accelerate BIM automation, and improve cross-tool and cross-disciplinary information interoperability.
