This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 296:1974). Specifies the dimensions of tapers for general use, smaller and larger tapers. The standard sizes of these tapers are given in table 2 (in millimetres) and table 3 (in inches), respectively. Provides for those elements which are threaded, two entirely distinct types of product according to the type of thread, M or UNC (see figures in clause 4).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 296:1991 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions and technical requirements for self-holding tapers used on tool shanks in machine tools. This second edition, published in 1991, cancels and replaces the first edition from 1974, offering a comprehensive technical revision to address a wider range of taper sizes and applications.
Self-holding tapers are crucial components in machining processes because they provide a secure and precise connection between cutting tools and machine spindles. ISO 296 ensures uniformity and interchangeability of self-holding tapers worldwide, facilitating compatibility and improving machining accuracy.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Classification
ISO 296 classifies self-holding tapers into three main categories based on size and use:- Tapers for general use (Morse tapers Nos. 1 to 6)
- Smaller tapers (metric Nos. 4 and 6, as well as No. 0 Morse taper and Brown & Sharpe tapers Nos. 1 to 3)
- Larger tapers (metric Nos. 80 to 200)
-
Dimensions and Tables
The standard provides detailed dimensions in millimetres (Table 2) and inches (Table 3), ensuring accurate reference for global manufacturing and engineering. It includes specifications for diameter, length, taper ratio, thread types (metric M and UNC), and tolerances. -
Thread Variants
For threaded elements, ISO 296 distinguishes between two thread systems-Metric (M) and Unified National Coarse (UNC)-with specific symbols for identification. This specification aids in avoiding interchangeability issues, ensuring correct tool mounting with compatible threading. -
Conicity and Tolerances
Taper angles and tolerances conform to ISO 1947 standards on conical tolerances (quality AT5), guaranteeing precise fit and consistent performance. Positive tolerance applies to external tapers, while negative tolerance applies to internal tapers. Alternative tolerances can be chosen for special applications. -
Coolant Supply Features
The standard also defines dimensions for grooves and holes specifically designed to accommodate coolant supply through the taper connection, enhancing tool life and machining efficiency.
Applications
ISO 296:1991 is essential for manufacturers, designers, and users of machine tools and cutting tools. Its practical applications include:
-
Machine Tool Industry
Enables standardized manufacturing of tool holders and shanks, promoting tool interchangeability across different machine brands and types. -
Precision Machining
Assures high-precision tool fitting and secure gripping to reduce tool runout and vibration, improving machining quality. -
Maintenance and Repair
Simplifies replacement and repair of tool shanks and holders with standardized tapers, reducing downtime. -
Coolant-Through Tools
Facilitates implementation of advanced coolant supply systems within tool shanks, enhancing thermal management during cutting operations. -
Global Supply Chain
Supports manufacturers and suppliers by providing a globally recognized reference for taper dimensions and thread types, ensuring international compatibility.
