This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 297 : 1982) and ISO 2583 : 1972. Specifies the dimensions, in millimetres, of 7/24 tapers for spindle noses and tool shanks. It also specifies the external diameters of the collars for these tool shanks, and the positioning of the front face of the collars with respect to the taper.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 297:1988 is an international standard that specifies precise dimensions for 7/24 tapers used on tool shanks intended for manual changing on machine tools. This second edition replaces both the original ISO 297:1982 and ISO 2583:1972 standards. The standard defines the taper profile, detailed measurements in millimeters for spindle noses and tool shanks, and key features such as collar diameters and positioning of collar front faces relative to the taper.
Developed collaboratively by ISO Technical Committees TC 29 (Small tools) and TC 39 (Machine tools), ISO 297:1988 ensures global interchangeability and compatibility of tool holders and spindles with 7/24 taper interfaces. This consistency facilitates maintenance, tooling replacement, and equipment upgrades across diverse industrial environments.
Key Topics
- 7/24 Taper Dimensions: The standard prescribes the exact geometric dimensions for tapers ranging from Nos. 30 to 80, including diameters, lengths, and taper angles in millimeters.
- Collar Specifications: It defines the external diameters of collars on tool shanks and specifies the positioning of the collar front face in relation to the taper’s gauge plane, critical for correct tool seating.
- Tool Shank Design: Includes details on the recesses, tenons, cylindrical tenon sizes, and optional grooves to ensure secure and precise tool fixation.
- Thread Specifications: Specifies thread types for fastening, available in either metric (M) or Unified National (UN) thread standards, with clear marking requirements to avoid confusion.
- Manual Changing Compatibility: The taper design supports manual changing of tools, making it compatible with spindle noses intended for operator engagement without automated systems.
- Interchangeability Considerations: ISO 297 emphasizes dimensional tolerances allowing interchangeability between metric and inch-based parts for flexible application in various international contexts.
Applications
ISO 297:1988 is widely applied in the manufacturing and tooling industries for securing cutting tools and accessories on machine tool spindles. Key practical uses include:
- Machine Tool Spindle Interfaces: Standardized 7/24 tapers create uniform interfaces for attaching tools such as drills, milling cutters, and lathes, enabling quick and reliable manual tool changes.
- Tooling System Design: Engineers and tooling designers use ISO 297 dimensions to design compatible tool holders and machine spindle noses for flexibility and precision.
- Maintenance and Replacement Operations: The clearly defined collar and taper measurements assist maintenance teams in selecting and replacing tool shanks with guaranteed fit and optimal alignment.
- Small and Medium-Sized Machine Tools: Particularly suited for applications where manual tool changes are common, including workshops, repair facilities, and production lines without automatic tool changers.
- International Manufacturing: Ensures consistency and compatibility of tool shanks and spindles sourced from global suppliers, which enhances cross-border manufacturing and equipment interoperability.
Related Standards
- ISO 7388-1: Specifies dimensions for 7/24 tapers related to tool shanks with automatic driving for machine tool spindle noses and changers, complementing ISO 297 which focuses on manual changing.
- ISO 4762: Defines characteristics of hexagon socket head cap screws (product grade A), commonly used for securing components in tooling assemblies compliant with ISO 297.
- ISO 2583:1972: The original standard replaced by ISO 297:1988, previously covering related taper dimensions.
- National Standards: Adaptations of ISO 297 may include national preferences for metric or UN thread designs, but always ensure adherence to the taper profile and collar positioning specifications.
