This document specifies the equipment and procedures for determining the tensile strength of a product parallel to its faces. It is applicable to thermal insulating products. Overview
ISO 29766:2022 - Thermal insulating products for building applications - Determination of tensile strength parallel to faces - specifies the equipment, specimen preparation and test procedures for measuring the tensile strength of thermal insulating products when pulled parallel to their faces. The standard is used to assess whether insulation products have sufficient mechanical strength to withstand stresses during transportation, handling and application.

- Procedure: Measure thickness, width and length (per ISO 29466 and ISO 29768), mount centrally in clamps, pull until failure, record maximum tensile force and failure mode. Discard failures outside the testing area.
- Calculation: Tensile strength (σt) = maximum recorded tensile force divided by cross-sectional testing area (thickness × width). Express mean value to two significant figures.
- Precision: Based on interlaboratory data - 95 % repeatability ≈ 3 %; 95 % reproducibility ≈ 10 %.
- Reporting: Test report must reference ISO 29766:2022 and include product ID, conditioning, specimen details, test conditions, deviations and all individual and mean results.
