The aim of this part of ISO 3002 is to apply the basic teminology defined in the parts 1 to 4 specifically to grinding operations. The meaning of the word grinding is considered in a limited sense as a material removal operation in which the tool is a grinding wheel. The primary motion is the rotation of the grinding wheel. A feed motion is applied to the tool or workpiece to obtain a continuation of the removal of workpiece material in the form of small chips by the action of individual cutting edges. It may consists of several components.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3002-5:1989 is Part 5 of the ISO 3002 series (“Basic quantities in cutting and grinding”) and defines basic terminology specifically for grinding processes using grinding wheels. Prepared by ISO/TC 29 (Small tools), this standard applies the general terminology of Parts 1–4 to grinding operations where the tool is a grinding wheel. It treats grinding in a limited sense as a material-removal operation whose primary motion is the rotation of the grinding wheel and whose feed motion(s) produce removal of small chips by individual cutting edges.
Key topics and technical terms
The standard formalizes vocabulary and geometric/kinematic concepts used in grinding engineering, including:
- Primary motion and cutting speed: rotation of the grinding wheel and tangential cutting speed (recommended units: m/s).
- Grinding wheel and workpiece speeds: peripheral speeds (vs for wheel, vw for workpiece) and rotational frequencies (ns, nW).
- Feed motions: principal feed motion and combined feed components (axial, tangential, radial, rotary table feeds), with recommended units such as mm/s or mm per revolution.
- Surfaces and profiles:
- geometric, active and real grinding wheel surfaces and contact surfaces (geometric/kinematic/real).
- active grinding wheel profile and active profile length (lD) and width (bD).
- Contact and arc lengths in peripheral grinding: geometric, kinematic and real grinding arcs and contact lengths; definitions refer to the grinding principal point D.
- Equivalent grinding wheel radius (req) and related geometric relations for practical contact calculations.
- Nominal vs real values: distinction between machine-set (nominal) and actual (real) values accounting for deformation and wear.
- Reference systems and conventions: coordinate/plane references (as per ISO 3002-1) and language notes (official ISO languages vs additional translations).
Practical applications and users
ISO 3002-5:1989 is intended for professionals who require consistent terminology and a common technical language in grinding technology, including:
- Grinding-machine manufacturers and designers
- Tooling and abrasive-wheel producers
- Process engineers and production planners in surface, cylindrical and plunge grinding
- Metrology and quality engineers defining measurement and reporting practices
- Standards developers, technical writers, and trainers producing documentation, procedures or training materials
Using ISO 3002-5 helps improve clarity in specifications, machine programming, inspection reports and international collaboration.
