ISO 3006:2015 specifies two laboratory methods for testing certain essential fatigue strength characteristics of wheels intended for road use on passenger cars as defined in ISO 3833. The test methods are a) dynamic cornering fatigue test; b) dynamic radial fatigue test.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3006:2015, "Road vehicles - Passenger car wheels for road use - Test methods," defines two laboratory test methods to evaluate essential fatigue strength characteristics of passenger car wheels (as defined in ISO 3833). The standard provides uniform procedures for the dynamic cornering fatigue test and the dynamic radial fatigue test, enabling consistent comparison of wheel designs for durability and safety.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Scope: Applies to wheels intended for road use on passenger cars; uses fully processed new wheels equivalent to production items.
- Two test methods:
- Dynamic cornering fatigue test - applies a bending moment to the wheel (either by rotating the wheel under a stationary bending moment or by rotating the bending moment around a stationary wheel). Moment arm ranges in examples from 0.5 m to 1.4 m.
- Dynamic radial fatigue test - applies a constant radial load while the wheel/tyre assembly runs against a driven drum. Recommended minimum drum diameter: 1 700 mm.
- Mounting and fastening: Adaptor and mounting systems must be equivalent to vehicle fittings. Use hub bolts/wheel nuts or wheel bolts in the same condition and lubrication state as when fitted to the vehicle. Torque to vehicle or manufacturer specified values; re-tightening once is permitted early in the test.
- Load determination and control:
- Bending moment is calculated from applied force and moment arm and is determined using factors including tyre/road coefficient of friction (µ), static loaded tyre radius (R), wheel inset/outset (d), applied load (Fv), and an accelerated test factor (S) from Annex A (Table A.1). Maintain bending moment within ±2.5%.
- Radial load Fr is determined as Fr = Fv × K, where K is an accelerated test factor (Table A.2). Maintain radial load within ±2.5%.
- Tyre inflation: Cold inflation pressures are specified in Table 1 (e.g., 280 kPa, 450 kPa, 550 kPa depending on tyre usage load ranges). Pressure increases during running are normal; no adjustment required.
- Termination criteria: Stop the test on inability of the wheel to sustain load/tyre pressure, or on propagation of cracks (a crack is defined as material separation with propagation >10 mm) or visible stress-caused damage penetrating a section of the wheel.
- Annex A: Provides recommended accelerated test factors and minimum cycle counts for steel and aluminium wheels to achieve comparative accelerated fatigue testing.
Applications and Users
ISO 3006:2015 is used by:
- Wheel manufacturers and alloy/steel wheel designers for durability validation.
- Vehicle OEMs and suppliers for component approval and compatibility checks.
- Accredited testing laboratories performing fatigue testing and certification.
- Regulatory and homologation bodies needing standardized comparative test results.
Practical benefits include consistent fatigue performance benchmarking, improved safety validation, and harmonized test protocols for global supply chains.
