ISO 3046-1 specifies the requirements for the declaration of power, fuel consumption, lubricating oil consumption and the test method in addition to the basic requirements defined in ISO 15550. It defines codes for engine brake power in accordance with ISO 15550, in order, where necessary, to simplify the application of the statements of power and to facilitate communication. This applies, e.g., to statements of power used on engine data plates. ISO 3046-1 applies to reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines for land, rail-traction and marine use and may be applied to engines used to propel road construction and earth-moving machines, industrial trucks as well as for other applications where no suitable International Standard for these engines exists.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 3046-1:2002 (Reciprocating internal combustion engines)
ISO 3046-1:2002 specifies requirements for the declaration of engine power, fuel consumption and lubricating oil consumption and the associated test methods for reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines for land, rail-traction and marine use. It is a "Satellite" standard intended to be applied together with the “Core” standard ISO 15550. The standard also defines codes for engine brake power (useful for engine data plates and power statements) and covers adjusted and non-adjusted engine test procedures under specified reference and site ambient conditions.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Power declaration and codes: Defines how to state and code engine brake power in accordance with ISO 15550 to simplify communication and labelling.
- Test methods and reference conditions: Applies Test Method 1 (per ISO 15550) and requires clear specification of standard reference conditions and whether power adjustment or power correction is used.
- Adjusted vs non‑adjusted engines: Procedures for testing engines that are adjustable at test time versus pre‑set (non-adjusted) engines, including simulation of site ambient conditions.
- Power correction/adjustment: Guidance for correcting power for ambient conditions (including substitute reference conditions for turbocharged engines when limits are not reached).
- Fuel and lubricating oil consumption: Rules for declaring specific fuel consumption, calorific value considerations, and lubricating oil consumption declarations.
- Auxiliaries and auxiliaries classification: Treatment of essential, dependent and independent auxiliaries during tests (Annex A normative).
- Reporting and calculations: Required test report elements and methods for recalculating specific fuel consumption (Annexes B–D give tables, examples and calculation guidance).
Applications and who uses it
ISO 3046-1 is used by:
- Engine manufacturers for specifying declared power, fuel and oil consumption and for labelling (data plates).
- Test laboratories and OEM test engineers conducting engine performance tests and power corrections.
- Shipbuilders, rail and land-vehicle OEMs and procurement teams who require standardized power declarations for selection and compliance.
- Classification societies and regulatory authorities when additional rules apply (the standard recommends declaring applicable society or authority requirements).
- Fleet operators and maintenance teams who compare actual site performance to declared values and troubleshoot performance issues.
Practical use cases include preparing technical datasheets, performing engine acceptance tests at site or in the factory, and ensuring consistent communication of engine performance across international markets.
