This document specifies a method for the determination of the bursting strength of rubber or plastics coated fabrics, using a mechanically operated steel ball.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3303-1:2020 specifies the steel-ball method for determination of the bursting strength of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. The procedure reproduces an impact-type failure representative of service conditions and is especially useful for materials prone to necking (for example coated fabrics with knitted substrates). The method supports quality control, comparative testing and performance assessment.

- Immersion equipment, distilled/deionized water, wetting agent and blotting paper for wet tests.
- Test parameters: Ball travel rate 300 mm/min ± 30 mm/min. Read force and displacement to the required accuracy (force in newtons, displacement to 0.1 mm as specified).
- Conditioning and timing: Conditioning atmospheres follow ISO 2231. Minimum interval between manufacture and testing is 16 h. Specific conditioning durations are given for single- and double-sided coatings.
Applications
This test is applied where a realistic, multidirectional measure of coated-fabric strength is needed. Typical uses include:
- Incoming quality control of coated fabrics for covers, tents, inflatable products and protective materials.
- Comparative performance assessment between formulations, coatings or substrate constructions.
- Evaluations where tensile tests are inadequate due to necking or multidirectional stress conditions.
