The purpose of the method specified is to obtain an indication of machinability by cutting tools. The principle is based on the complete combustion of test pieces and weighing the sand remaining in the desiccator at the end of the procedure. The tubular hearth used to ignite the test pieces is shown in the figure.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3340:1976 defines a laboratory method to determine the sand content of hard and medium fibre building boards. The measured sand content provides an indication of the board's machinability by cutting tools and helps anticipate tool wear and quality issues. The method is based on complete combustion of representative test pieces, collection of ash and residual siliceous particles, acid cleaning and filtration, followed by drying and weighing of the retained sand.

- Procedure (high level):
- Break and mix conditioned test pieces; weigh 200 ± 2 g and place in tubular hearth.
- Ignite and collect ash and charred remains in an evaporating dish; complete combustion in muffle furnace (500–600 °C) until no carbonaceous matter remains.
- Transfer dry ash to a beaker, treat with hydrochloric acid, warm to ~75 °C, dilute and allow solids to settle.
- Decant acid, wash, and filter the stirred mixture through the 40 µm nylon sieve to remove particles below 40 µm.
- Rinse collected sand into a pre-dried crucible, dry at 103 ± 2 °C and weigh.
- Result expression: Sand content is reported as a percentage of the dry mass of the board (mass of collected sand divided by mass of conditioned board × 100).
