This document specifies three test methods for the determination of the tear strength of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber, namely the following: — method A, using a trouser test piece; — method B, using an angle test piece, with or without a nick of specified depth; — method C, using a crescent test piece with a nick. The value of tear strength obtained depends on the shape of the test piece, speed of stretching, and temperature of test. It can also be susceptible to grain effects in rubber. NOTE A separate method for the determination of the tear strength of small test pieces of rubber (Delft test pieces) is specified in ISO 34-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 34-1:2022 specifies standardized laboratory methods for determining the tear strength of vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber using three shaped test pieces: trouser, angle and crescent. The standard defines test principles, required apparatus, calibration, specimen preparation, test speeds, environmental conditioning, expression of results, precision and reporting. It is Part 1 of the ISO 34 series (Part 2 covers Delft small test pieces).
Key technical topics and requirements
- Test methods
- Method A (trouser) - measures median force to propagate a cut in a trouser-shaped specimen; preferred for many rubbers because it is less sensitive to cut length and modulus effects.
- Method B (angle) - two procedures:
- (a) unnicked angle: measures force to initiate and propagate a tear through the angle.
- (b) nicked angle: measures force to propagate a pre-made nick of specified depth.
- Method C (crescent) - measures force to propagate a pre-made nick in a crescent-shaped specimen.
- Dependence factors - tear strength results depend on specimen shape, stretching speed, test temperature and possible grain effects in rubber.
- Apparatus & accuracy
- Dies for cutting specified test-piece geometries; sharp, perpendicular cutting edges are required.
- Nick cutter and measurement tools (microscope or travelling stage) to control and verify nick depth (accuracy ~0.05 mm recommended).
- Thickness gauge per ISO 23529 guidance.
- Testing machine complying with ISO 5893, class 1 accuracy; specified jaw travel rates: 100 mm/min ±10 mm/min for trouser tests and 500 mm/min ±50 mm/min for angle/crescent tests. Low-inertia, autographic force recording recommended for trouser tests.
- Grips that tighten with tension and ensure axial alignment.
- Calibration & quality
- Clause on calibration, precision and an annex with interlaboratory precision results and a normative calibration schedule.
- Reporting
- Test report content and expression of results (median or maximum force divided by specimen thickness) are specified.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: material laboratories, product test houses, rubber compounders, OEM quality engineers, R&D teams, and certification bodies evaluating elastomers, hoses, seals, gaskets, tyres and molded rubber parts.
- Why it matters: provides repeatable, comparable tear-strength data for material selection, quality control, comparison of formulations, failure analysis and conformance to procurement specifications.
- Industries: automotive, aerospace, medical devices (where elastomers are used), consumer goods, industrial sealing and conveyor systems.
