Applicable to the determination of Fe contents, expressed as Fe2 O3 , of more than 0.020 % (m/m). Covers the dissolution of a test portion by alkaline fusion by means of sodium carbonate and boric acid. Dissolving of the residue with nitric acid solution and reduction of iron(III) by means of hydroxylammonium chloride. Formation of the iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex in a buffered medium at a pH between 3.5 and 4.2. Photometric measurement of the coloured complex at a wavelength of about 510 nm.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3429:1976 specifies a standardized photometric method for determining the iron content in sodium fluoride primarily used in aluminium production. The method utilizes the formation of a coloured iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex and its photometric measurement at a wavelength of about 510 nm. It is designed to accurately measure iron contents expressed as Fe₂O₃ exceeding 0.020% (m/m).
This international standard covers sample dissolution by alkaline fusion using sodium carbonate and boric acid, reduction of iron(III) ions with hydroxylammonium chloride, and the complexation reaction in a buffered medium with a pH range of 3.5 to 4.2. The method is important for ensuring material quality in aluminium production and related industrial processes.
Key benefits include:
- High precision iron determination for quality control
- Applicability to sodium fluoride used in aluminium manufacturing
- Use of photometric analysis for reliable and repeatable results
Key Topics
Scope
- Applicable for iron content determination in sodium fluoride, primarily for aluminium production
- Iron content quantified as Fe₂O₃ > 0.020% (m/m)
- Involves alkaline fusion with sodium carbonate and boric acid, followed by acidic dissolution and reduction
Principle
- Iron(III) reduced to iron(II) by hydroxylammonium chloride
- Formation of iron(II)-1,10-phenanthroline complex under buffered conditions (pH 3.5 - 4.2)
- Photometric measurement at ~510 nm wavelength to quantify iron concentration
Procedure Highlights
- Sample fusion at controlled temperatures (550 °C and 750 °C) for complete dissolution
- Use of platinum dish and controlled electric furnaces to prevent contamination
- Buffering and pH adjustment critical to ensure complex stability and accurate measurement
- Calibration curve preparation using standard iron solutions for quantification
- Results expressed as percentage by mass of Fe₂O₃
Reagents and Apparatus
- Includes sodium carbonate, boric acid, nitric and hydrochloric acids, hydroxylammonium chloride, 1,10-phenanthroline hydrochloride, and buffer solutions
- Utilizes spectrophotometer or photoelectric absorptiometer with appropriate filters (500–520 nm)
- pH meter and indicator paper for pH adjustments
Applications
ISO 3429:1976 is widely used in:
- Aluminium Industry: Ensuring the purity and quality of sodium fluoride used in aluminium smelting and refining
- Chemical Analysis Laboratories: Standardized testing for iron impurities in industrial-grade sodium fluoride
- Quality Control: Monitoring compliance with international material specifications for chemical manufacturing
- Research & Development: Analytical method validation for materials containing trace iron
The standard facilitates consistent iron content evaluation, which is critical to avoid process disruptions and maintain product quality in aluminium production.
