ISO 3449:2004 specifies laboratory tests for measuring the structural characteristics of, and gives performance requirements in a representative test for, falling-object protective structures (FOPS) intended for use on ride-on earth-moving machines as defined in ISO 6165. It is applicable to both FOPS supplied as an integral part of the machine and those supplied separately for attachment to the machine. It is not applicable to FOPS intended for use on landfill compactors, excavators, rollers, trenchers, pipelayers, for the additional seat for operation of an attachment (e.g. attachment backhoe), or on machines with a power rating of less than 15 kW.

Overview
ISO 3449:2005 - Earth-moving machinery - Falling-object protective structures (FOPS) specifies laboratory tests and performance requirements for FOPS used on ride-on earth-moving machines (see ISO 6165). The standard defines repeatable drop tests to evaluate a FOPS’ resistance to falling-object impact and sets pass/fail criteria based on whether the structure prevents entry into the operator’s deflection-limiting volume (DLV). It applies to integral and add-on FOPS (but excludes certain machine types and machines under 15 kW).

- Test objects and apparatus: Steel or ductile-iron impactors sized/massed to develop required energy; drop mechanism that allows free fall; DLV structure or dynamic instrumentation (accuracy ±5 %) to detect penetration.
- Deflection-Limiting Volume (DLV): Orthogonal approximation of a seated operator with hard hat (see ISO 3164). The FOPS must completely cover and overlap the DLV; no part of the FOPS may enter the DLV under first or subsequent impacts.
- Test procedure and conditions: FOPS mounted to a machine-equivalent test bed; machine attachments and suspensions set to operating or maximum stiffness; impact locations selected to produce maximum deformation (three selection cases provided). Tests are generally destructive.
- Pass/fail: Any penetration of the DLV by the protective structure constitutes failure.
- Reporting and labeling: Standard includes requirements for labelling and detailed test reporting (typical test report in Annex A).
