This document specifies the technical requirements and test procedures for penetrant materials for their type testing and batch testing. This document covers the temperature range from 10 °C to 50 °C. Additional tests in ISO 3452-5 or ISO 3452-6 can be required outside this range. On-site control tests and methods are detailed in ISO 3452‑1.
Abstract
Overview - ISO 3452-2:2021 (Penetrant materials testing)
ISO 3452-2:2021 is the international standard that specifies technical requirements and test procedures for penetrant materials used in penetrant testing (a surface non-destructive testing - NDT - method). It covers type testing and batch testing of penetrant products within the temperature range 10 °C to 50 °C. For on-site control and inspection methods see ISO 3452‑1; tests outside the 10–50 °C range may require ISO 3452‑5 or ISO 3452‑6.
Key technical topics and requirements
The standard defines classification, test methods and acceptance criteria for penetrant systems and components, including:
- System types: fluorescent penetrants (Type I) and colour-contrast penetrants (Type II), plus dual‑purpose families
- Sensitivity testing: procedures to assess defect detection capability and product baseline sensitivity
- Physical and chemical tests: appearance, density, viscosity, flashpoint, water content, particle size distribution
- Performance tests: washability (Method A), penetrant tolerance, developer performance, re‑dispersability
- Optical and stability tests: fluorescent brightness, UV stability, thermal stability of fluorescence
- Environmental/compatibility tests: water tolerance, corrosive properties, content of sulfur and halogens (for low-sulfur/halogen products)
- Packaging and labelling: requirements for transport, storage and user information; special batch tests for pressurized spray cans
The document also covers personnel, testing facilities, reporting obligations for type and batch testing, and includes normative annexes (e.g., comparison of fluorescent brightness and test equipment).
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 3452-2 is used to ensure reliable, repeatable penetrant material performance in industries that rely on surface NDT, including:
- Aerospace, automotive and railway manufacturers - for component qualification and supplier control
- Oil & gas, petrochemical and power generation - for in-service inspections and maintenance programs
- NDT laboratories and QA/QC departments - for type approval, incoming batch verification and conformity testing
- Penetrant materials manufacturers - to design, certify and label products that meet international performance and safety criteria
- Regulatory bodies and procurement teams - to specify compliant products and testing procedures
Adopting ISO 3452-2 helps organizations ensure consistent defect detection, product safety (flashpoint and corrosivity), environmental compliance (low sulfur/halogens) and traceability of penetrant materials.
