Abstract
Overview
ISO 3452-4:1998, "Non‑destructive testing - Penetrant testing - Part 4: Equipment", defines the characteristics and requirements for equipment used in penetrant (liquid penetrant) NDT. It covers both portable in‑situ equipment and fixed installations, and is part of the ISO 3452 series that replaces the earlier ISO 3452:1984. The standard focuses on practical equipment selection, health/safety/environmental controls, and installation design to ensure reliable penetrant inspection results.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and equipment types
- Two main categories: in situ inspection equipment (portable) and fixed penetrant installations.
- In‑situ equipment examples
- Portable spray equipment, lint‑free cloths, brushes, personal protective equipment (PPE), white light sources, and UV‑A lamps for fluorescent penetrants.
- Fixed installation requirements
- Materials of construction must resist attack by penetrant system chemicals and must not alter penetrant properties.
- Location and containment: tanks with lids, retaining trays, prevention of external contamination.
- Effluent treatment and water recirculation must meet local discharge and air‑emission laws.
- Process stations and controls
- Preparation/precleaning and degreasing areas with cooling facilities as needed; vapour degreasers must meet air pollution rules.
- Penetrant application: manual/airless/electrostatic spraying, brushing, flow‑on or immersion; extraction where spray is used.
- Penetrant drain, excess removal (immersion tanks with agitation or manual/automatic spray‑wash). Manual spray: pressure as low as possible and temperature not exceeding 50 °C; measure pressure near the nozzle.
- Emulsifier application: hydrophilic may be applied by immersion, foam or flow‑on; lipophilic (solvent‑based) emulsifiers by immersion only.
- Drying: suction, rotation, or warm‑air ovens (maximum 80 °C), forced‑air ovens to prevent condensation/oxidation.
- Developer application
- Powder (dust storm, electrostatic spray, flock, tumbler, fluidized bed), water suspension, solvent‑based (spray cabinets), and water‑soluble developers - each with specific equipment and handling rules.
- Inspection lighting
- Fluorescent inspection: UV‑A lamps meeting prEN ISO 3059; ambient visible light ≤ 20 lx.
- Colour‑contrast inspection: white light ≥ 500 lx at the inspected surface.
Applications and users
- Used by NDT managers, QA/QC engineers, inspection technicians, plant designers and safety/environmental staff to:
- Specify and procure penetrant testing equipment and fixed lines.
- Design inspection bays and process flow for consistent, repeatable penetrant testing.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety and environmental regulations during penetrant processes.
- Typical industries: aerospace, automotive, oil & gas, power generation, heavy fabrication, and maintenance/field inspection services.
