ISO 3534-3:2013 defines the terms used in the field of design of experiments and may be used in the drafting of other International Standards. More specifically, it defines terms used in the field of design of experiments for which the response variable is one-dimensional and continuous and for which the expectation of the response variable is linear in the parameters. The terms with regard to the statistical analysis are based on the assumption that the error term follows a normal distribution with constant variance.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3534-3:2013 - "Statistics - Vocabulary and symbols - Part 3: Design of experiments" is an ISO international standard that defines standardized terms and symbols used in the field of experimental design (DOE). The standard is focused on experiments where the response variable is one-dimensional and continuous, the expected response is linear in the model parameters, and statistical analysis assumes normally distributed errors with constant variance. ISO 3534-3:2013 is the third edition and is part of the ISO 3534 series on statistical vocabulary.
Key topics and technical coverage
This part of ISO 3534 provides a consistent vocabulary and references for designing and analysing experiments. Major technical topics include:
- General DOE terminology: core definitions used across experimental design practice (factors, levels, responses, interactions).
- Arrangements of experiments: descriptions of common experimental layouts such as factorial designs, fractional factorials, screening designs, randomized block designs, Latin squares and balanced incomplete block designs.
- Specialized designs: response surface designs for optimization, mixture designs for component proportions, and nested designs for multi‑level or inter‑laboratory studies.
- Methods of analysis: standard terms for graphical methods, regression analysis and other analytical approaches used to estimate model parameters and assess results.
- Design safeguards: vocabulary for blocking, randomization and strategies to limit bias from nuisance factors.
- Supporting material: informative annexes with concept diagrams (Annex A), methodology for vocabulary development (Annex B), experimental design checklists (Annex C) and a systems‑model perspective on design (Annex D).
Note: the standard defines terms and symbols but does not prescribe specific numerical procedures beyond vocabulary and assumptions (linear expectation, normal errors, constant variance).
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO 3534-3 is useful wherever rigorous experimental design terminology is needed to ensure clear communication and consistent documentation. Typical users include:
- Statisticians and data scientists drafting DOE reports or standards
- Quality engineers and R&D teams in manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, food, materials and process industries
- Academics and researchers in agriculture, medicine and engineering
- Standards writers and regulators referencing consistent statistical vocabulary
- Consultants and trainers teaching DOE methods (factorial design, response surface, screening)
Using ISO 3534-3 improves clarity in technical reports, teaching materials, standard development, and cross‑discipline collaboration.
