This International Standard specifies the dimensions for 8 mm Type S motion-picture projection reels/spools of 75 to 312 mm diameter (with the exception of the 75 mm Type No. 7) that are interchangeable on all types of reel-to-reel projection equipment. NOTE - The No. 7 reel (75 mm), although temporarily recognized, will be superseded by that specified in ISO 6033. lt is recommended that new projection equipment and reel/spool manufacturing capacity should comply with the requirements of ISO 6033.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3639:1981 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies the dimensions and specifications for projection reels and spools ranging from 75 mm to 312 mm diameter, designed for the use of 8 mm Type S motion-picture film. The standard ensures that these reels and spools are interchangeable on all types of reel-to-reel projection equipment, promoting compatibility and quality in cinematography equipment across manufacturers and regions. Note that the 75 mm Type No. 7 reel is temporarily covered but will be replaced by specifications in ISO 6033; new equipment should be designed to comply with ISO 6033.
Key Topics
-
Scope and Interchangeability
ISO 3639 sets critical dimensions for 8 mm Type S motion-picture film projection reels and spools, with the aim of making them fully interchangeable between different reel-to-reel projectors. -
Dimensional Requirements
- Applies to reels/spools from 75 mm to 312 mm in diameter (except the 75 mm No. 7 type).
- Reference surfaces and planes of rotation are clearly defined for accurate measurement and fabrication.
- Dimensions are specified regardless of the manufacturing material, which can include metal or plastic.
- Special requirements and tolerances for flange thickness, hub configuration, and spacing based on the flange material are described.
-
Film Attachment and Retention
- Provisions must be made for the secure attachment and easy release of the film end.
- Reel/spool designs may include slots, plugs, or clips for film retention, supporting both manual and automatic rewind operations.
-
Design Recommendations
- Reels designated as size 10 are recommended to have one solid flange to facilitate film loading and handling.
- Stability considerations for plastic reels, especially regarding spindle hole tolerances under varying temperature and humidity.
Applications
-
Cinematography Equipment Manufacturing
Manufacturers of cinematic projectors, reels, and spools use ISO 3639 to ensure their 8 mm Type S film accessories are standardized and compatible globally. -
Film Exhibition and Projection
Cinema operators and archival institutions benefit from reel and spool interchangeability, reducing equipment complexity and maintenance. -
Archiving, Preservation, and Restoration
Film archivists and restoration professionals rely on standard reel and spool sizes to safely wind, store, and handle delicate 8 mm Type S film stock. -
Educational and Home Use
Schools, museums, and enthusiasts using 8 mm projection equipment can confidently source replacement reels, knowing they meet international compatibility standards.
