ISO 3730:2012 - Shipbuilding and marine structures: Mooring winches - defines design, operation, performance and acceptance test requirements for automatic and non-automatic mooring winches (single-drum) with hydraulic, electric or steam drives. The standard covers winches that manoeuvre, hold and store mooring ropes (and may be used for warping), specifying loads, speeds, drum design, braking, drive and control requirements and required factory tests.

- Allowable stresses limited to fractions of material yield/proof strengths (e.g., 0.4× upper yield for drum load basis; 0.9× for some torque/holding conditions).
- Braking & control:
- Electric winches require automatic braking that holds 1.5× drum load and stops drum at max speed without damage; hydraulic/steam have specified holding and speed control criteria. Drum brakes must meet holding load requirements.
- Acceptance tests:
- Type/individual tests after assembly: no‑load and loaded operation, brake tests, holding-load verification and automatic tension tests for automatic winches.
