This document specifies a method for designating test specimen axes in relation to product texture by means of an X-Y-Z orthogonal coordinate system. This document applies equally to unnotched and notched (or precracked) test specimens. This document is intended only for metallic materials with uniform texture that can be unambiguously determined. Test specimen orientation is decided before specimen machining, identified in accordance with the designation system specified in this document, and recorded.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3785:2023 - Metallic materials: Designation of test specimen axes in relation to product texture - specifies a standardized method for identifying test specimen axes using an X‑Y‑Z orthogonal coordinate system. The standard applies to both unnotched and notched (precracked) specimens and is intended for metallic materials with a uniform, unambiguous texture or grain‑flow. Specimen orientation must be decided and recorded before machining to ensure reproducible mechanical test results (e.g., tensile, fracture toughness, impact).
Key topics and requirements
- Coordinate system:
- X = direction of principal deformation (maximum grain flow)
- Y = direction of least deformation
- Z = direction normal to the X‑Y plane
- Designation rules:
- Single‑letter designations (X, Y, Z) for specimens aligned with product grain‑flow directions.
- Two‑letter designations (XY, XZ, YZ) for specimens lying midway between principal directions.
- For intermediate angles within the X‑Y, X‑Z, or Y‑Z planes, state the angle between the two letters (first letter = direction toward which the axis is inclined).
- If the direction vector lies outside the orthogonal planes, specify orientation on a part drawing; test results carry no orientation designation.
- Exceptions:
- No grain flow (e.g., castings): specify orientation on drawings; no orientation code on results.
- Not aligned specimens: use two‑letter or angled designations as above.
- Thin‑walled tubes / helical grain flow and cylinders: special depiction rules are provided for tubular and cylindrical products.
- Notched / precracked specimens: use a hyphenated code where the letters before the hyphen denote the direction normal to the crack plane and letters after the hyphen denote the anticipated crack extension direction.
- Recordkeeping: specimen orientation must be decided prior to machining and recorded in material specifications or test reports.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 3785:2023 is used by:
- Materials engineers and metallurgists defining test protocols for tensile testing, fracture toughness, and impact testing
- Mechanical testing laboratories ensuring reproducible specimen orientation and test comparability
- Quality and standards teams writing material specifications for wrought metals, welded components, castings, and additive manufactured parts
- Researchers comparing directional mechanical properties (anisotropy) and fracture behavior
Practical benefits include consistent reporting of orientation‑dependent properties, improved comparability across test results, and clearer material specifications.
