ISO 3864-1:2011 establishes the safety identification colours and design principles for safety signs and safety markings to be used in workplaces and in public areas for the purpose of accident prevention, fire protection, health hazard information and emergency evacuation. It also establishes the basic principles to be applied when developing standards containing safety signs. ISO 3864-1:2011 is applicable to all locations where safety issues related to people need to be addressed. However, it is not applicable to the signalling used for guiding rail, road, river, maritime and air traffic and, generally speaking, to those sectors subject to a regulation which may differ.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3864-1:2011 - Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Part 1: Design principles for safety signs and safety markings - establishes internationally harmonized design principles for safety signs, safety colours and safety markings used in workplaces and public areas. Its aim is to support accident prevention, fire protection, health-hazard information and emergency evacuation by standardizing shapes, colours, layouts and basic sign geometry so messages are understood quickly and consistently across borders.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Sign types and meanings: Defines five primary safety sign types and their geometric shapes and colours:
- Prohibition - white background, red circular band and diagonal bar, black symbol (circle with diagonal)
- Mandatory action - blue circle, white symbol (blue must cover ≥ 50% of sign area)
- Warning - yellow equilateral triangle with black band and black symbol (yellow ≥ 50% area)
- Safe condition - green square, white symbol (green ≥ 50% area)
- Fire equipment - red square, white symbol (red ≥ 50% area)
- Graphical symbol design: Principles for symbol identifiability and legibility; guidance for layout, proportion and contrast so symbols remain clear at intended observation distances.
- Layout rules: Templates for safety signs, supplementary signs (text or additional symbols), combination signs and multiple signs to convey complex messages.
- Observation distance and sizing: Introduces the factor of distance (z = l/h) relating sign height to viewing distance to determine safe observation distance.
- Safety markings: Rules for applying safety colours and contrast colours to make equipment, walkways or hazards conspicuous.
- Contrast and luminance: Emphasis on achieving adequate luminance contrast between sign and background; colorimetric/photometric requirements are referenced to ISO 3864‑4.
Practical applications and users
ISO 3864-1 is used where people’s safety must be communicated visually:
- Facility and safety managers creating evacuation plans and wayfinding
- Occupational health & safety professionals specifying workplace signage
- Sign and label manufacturers ensuring compliant designs and materials
- Designers and architects integrating safety markings into buildings
- Standards developers and regulators aligning national rules with international practice
Use cases include emergency exit signage, fire equipment identification, hazard warnings, mandatory PPE notices and floor/area safety markings.
