This document specifies two laboratory methods for testing certain essential strength characteristics of disc wheels intended for road use on commercial vehicles, buses, trailers, and multipurpose passenger vehicles, as defined in ISO 3833. The test methods are: — dynamic cornering fatigue test and — dynamic radial fatigue test.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3894:2023 - Road vehicles - Wheels/rims for commercial vehicles - Test methods specifies two laboratory test methods to evaluate essential fatigue strength characteristics of disc wheels used on commercial vehicles, buses, trailers and multipurpose passenger vehicles (per ISO 3833). The standard defines dynamic cornering fatigue and dynamic radial fatigue tests, providing equipment descriptions, procedures, load/moment determination, termination criteria and recommended accelerated test factors and cycles.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and specimens: Tests apply to fully processed new wheels equivalent to those intended for vehicle service.
- Two laboratory methods
- Dynamic cornering fatigue test - applies a bending moment (force F × moment arm l) to the wheel. Test fixtures may rotate the wheel under a stationary bending moment or apply a rotating bending moment to a stationary wheel.
- Dynamic radial fatigue test - subjects the wheel/tyre to a constant radial load while the wheel rotates, typically against a driven drum.
- Equipment highlights
- Moment arm range typically 0.5 m to 1.4 m.
- Recommended minimum external drum diameter for radial testing: 1 700 mm.
- Procedure and fastening
- Use test bolts and wheel nuts equivalent to vehicle hardware; tighten to manufacturer torque and allow one retightening after 1 000–5 000 rotations unless otherwise specified.
- Maintain bending moment within ±2.5% and radial load within ±5% of calculated values.
- Load and moment determination
- Cornering bending moment is calculated using parameters including tyre/road friction coefficient, loaded radius, inset/outset (d), maximum vertical static load and an accelerated test factor (S).
- Radial load uses an accelerated load factor (K) applied to the maximum vertical static load.
- Test termination criteria
- Inability of wheel to sustain load, propagation of cracks (>10 mm), abnormal loosening of fasteners, or final torque below 70% of initial torque requirement.
- Annex A: Recommended accelerated test factors and minimum cycles (separate guidance for steel and aluminium wheels).
Applications and users
ISO 3894:2023 is used by:
- Wheel and vehicle manufacturers (design validation, durability and safety verification)
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies
- OEM quality and supplier acceptance testing
- R&D and failure analysis teams optimizing wheel materials and geometry The standard enables consistent, repeatable wheel fatigue testing, comparative evaluation across suppliers and compliance with safety/durability requirements.
