The symbols system is intended for simplifying the preparation of diagrams of products in all branches of industry and is to be used in technical documentation as well as in technical and educational literature. This part contains the following: Motion of links of mechanisms, kinematic pairs, links and connections of their components, and N-bar linkages and their components.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3952-1:1981 - "Kinematic diagrams - Graphical symbols - Part 1" defines a system of standardized graphical symbols for kinematic diagrams. Published as the first edition on 1981-12-15 and developed by ISO/TC 10 (Technical drawings), this International Standard is intended to simplify preparation and interpretation of mechanism schematics across all branches of industry and in technical and educational literature.
Key topics
- Scope of symbols for kinematic diagrams applicable across industries and documentation types.
- Motion of links - graphical representation conventions for moving elements in mechanisms.
- Kinematic pairs - standardized symbols for joints and constraints between links.
- Links and components - notation for links and their constituent parts.
- N-bar linkages - symbols and component designations for multi-bar mechanisms.
- Multilingual publication and adoption context (ISO/TC 10; published in English/French/Russian).
Technical requirements (high level)
- Establishes a consistent set of graphical symbols to be used on kinematic diagrams in technical documentation and education.
- Symbols are intended to facilitate unambiguous communication of mechanism topology, motion relationships and component connections between specialists in different countries.
- Applies generically to elements of kinematic diagrams-users should apply the standardized symbols when preparing schematics to ensure clarity and interoperability of technical drawings.
Applications
- Creation of clear, standardized mechanism schematics for machine design and mechanism analysis.
- Use in technical drawings, assembly and maintenance documentation, and educational materials (textbooks, lecture notes).
- Reference for CAD drafting conventions and for technical illustrators producing kinematic schematics.
- Useful in designing, reviewing or teaching about linkages, joints and multi-bar mechanisms (N-bar linkages).
Who should use ISO 3952-1
- Mechanical engineers and designers working on mechanisms and linkages.
- Draftsmen, CAD specialists and technical illustrators preparing kinematic diagrams.
- Educators and authors of technical literature on mechanisms.
- Standards committees and organizations seeking consistent symbol usage across documents.
Related standards
- ISO 3952 series includes additional parts covering friction and gear mechanisms, cam mechanisms, Geneva and ratchet mechanisms, couplings and brakes (Parts 2 and 3 referenced in the standard’s table of contents).
- Developed by ISO/TC 10 (Technical drawings) - consult related ISO technical drawing standards for complementary graphical conventions.
