ISO 3953:2011 specifies a method for the determination of tap density, i.e. the density of a powder that has been tapped into a container under specified conditions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 3953:2011 specifies a standardized laboratory method for determining the tap density of metallic powders - the density of a powder after it has been mechanically tapped into a container under defined conditions. The standard defines the principle, required apparatus, sampling masses, procedure, calculation and reporting requirements to ensure repeatable, comparable tap-density measurements for powder metallurgy and related industries.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Principle: Tap density (ρt) = mass of the test portion (m) divided by the tapped volume (V) after tapping until no further volume decrease occurs.
- Apparatus:
- Balance accurate to 0.1 g.
- Graduated glass cylinders: 100 cm³ (graduations 1 cm³; reading ±0.5 cm³) or 25 cm³ (graduations 0.2 cm³; reading ±0.2 cm³). Use 25 cm³ for apparent densities > 4 g/cm³ (e.g., refractory metals).
- Tapping apparatus with a 3 mm stroke and 100–300 taps/min; tapping must densify without loosening surface layers.
- Sampling and sample sizes: Table-based sample masses depending on apparent density (examples: 100 g for many tests in 100 cm³ cylinder; smaller masses for low-density powders). Tests are typically performed on three test portions if possible.
- Procedure highlights:
- Clean and dry the cylinder before use.
- Weigh test portion to nearest 0.1 g, pour to form a level surface, then tap until volume stabilizes.
- If surface is uneven, use the mean of highest and lowest readings for final volume.
- Practical note: determine the minimum taps N for no further change and use 2N for subsequent tests; for fine refractory metal powders, 3 000 taps is considered satisfactory.
- Results and reporting:
- Report the arithmetic mean of determinations; round to 0.1 g/cm³ up to 4 g/cm³ and to 0.2 g/cm³ above 4 g/cm³.
- Test report must reference ISO 3953:2011 and include sample identification, drying procedure, cylinder capacity, mass of test portion, method used, results and any deviations or occurrences affecting results.
Applications and users
ISO 3953 is used to characterize bulk handling and packing behavior of metallic powders in:
- Powder metallurgy (sintering feedstocks)
- Additive manufacturing (metal 3D printing powders)
- Powder blending, storage and transport quality control
- R&D and materials qualification labs
Typical users include quality/control engineers, materials scientists, lab technicians, powder manufacturers and purchasers who require consistent, comparable tap density data for formulation, process control and specification.
Related standards
ISO 3953 was prepared by ISO/TC 119 (Powder metallurgy). For full powder-testing programs, users typically consult other ISO powder-metallurgy test methods and standards produced by the same technical committee.
