Specifies the requirements for the location and marking of the vehicle identification number (VIN) on motor vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and mopeds as defined in ISO 3833. The VIN is a structured combination of characters assigned to a vehicle by the manufacturer for identification purposes. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (1977).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4030:1983 - Road vehicles: Vehicle identification number (VIN) - Location and attachment - specifies where and how the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) must be placed and attached on motor vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and mopeds defined in ISO 3833. This second edition (1983) cancels and replaces the 1977 edition and complements ISO 3779 (VIN content and structure). The standard helps ensure VINs are visible, durable and resistant to alteration.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope: Applies to motor vehicles, trailers, motorcycles and mopeds as defined by ISO 3833.
- General placement: VIN shall be located on the right side of the vehicle and, where possible, toward the front half.
- Enclosed vehicles: When regulations require the VIN to be readable from outside, it shall be located inside the passenger compartment adjacent to the windscreen pillar.
- Visibility & durability: VIN location must be easily visible and positioned to preclude obliteration or alteration. The selected location must be described in the vehicle’s Owner’s Handbook or equivalent.
- Attachment options: Manufacturers may choose between:
- Direct marking on an integral part of the vehicle (e.g., frame or non-removable body parts), or
- Separate plate permanently affixed to the vehicle, or
- A combination of both approaches on the same vehicle.
- Character size and legibility:
- Minimum character height 7 mm when marked directly on frame/body for motor vehicles and trailers (not for motorcycles/mopeds).
- Minimum character height 4 mm in all other cases.
- Characters must be legible, durable and not easily altered.
- Cross-references: Presentation requirements for the VIN itself are provided in ISO 3779.
Applications - who uses this standard
- Vehicle manufacturers - to design compliant VIN placement and attachment methods during production.
- Component and plate suppliers - to produce VIN plates and marking tools that meet the specified durability and size requirements.
- Regulatory authorities & type-approval agencies - to assess compliance during vehicle certification and inspections.
- Registration and enforcement bodies, law enforcement, insurers, and salvage/recovery services - for consistent vehicle identification and fraud prevention.
- Vehicle designers and aftermarket modifiers - to ensure VINs remain visible and secure after design changes or repairs.
