Defines the electrical characteristics with which flasher units shall comply when submitted for acceptance. Applies to flashers intended for use on motor vehicles with 12 V or 24 V systems, which may or may not be equipped for a towed vehicle. Can be applied to motorcycles. Not applicable to two-level luminous intensity devices.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4082:1981 - Road vehicles - Motor vehicles - Flasher units defines the electrical characteristics and test requirements for flasher units (turn‑signal and hazard warning flashers) submitted for acceptance. It applies to flasher units intended for motor vehicles with 12 V or 24 V electrical systems, including motorcycles and vehicles that may tow one or two trailers. The standard is focused on electrical performance, test circuitry and environmental/durability checks, and excludes two‑level luminous intensity devices.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & classes: Two classes for both 12 V and 24 V systems - Class A (standard) and Class B (heavy duty).
- Marking: Each flasher must be legibly marked with manufacturer, rated voltage, terminal identification and lamp wattages.
- Terminal identification: Defines terminal numbers and allocations for supply, switch connections, pilot lamps, returns and trailer circuits.
- Working voltage & test conditions: Typical test working voltages are 13 V or 26 V; tests are performed at ambient 23 ±5 °C unless otherwise specified.
- Test circuitry: Specifies wiring diagram, resistive loads and use of filament lamps (per an IEC publication) to simulate vehicle and towed‑vehicle loads.
- Flash performance: Flash frequency and current “on” time limits - e.g., current “on” time must remain between 30% and 75% of cycle; flash rates and behavior are defined for direction indicators and hazard warning functions across temperature and load ranges.
- Starting behavior: Requirements for first “on” time and first “off” time after switch closure, and criteria on average of repeated starts.
- Electrical robustness: Tests include voltage drop limits across input/output, overload strength (e.g., withstand a 25 A surge), dielectric strength (1 000 V r.m.s.), and transient overvoltage considerations.
- Environmental & durability tests: Vibration (operational and endurance), extreme temperature functioning (‑30 °C to +80 °C), and durability tests with specified procedures.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 4082 is used by:
- Automotive OEMs and tier‑1 suppliers specifying or validating flasher modules for cars, trucks and motorcycles.
- Component manufacturers designing flasher units to ensure compliance with global requirements for 12 V/24 V systems.
- Test laboratories performing acceptance, type‑approval or QA testing of flasher assemblies.
- Regulatory authorities and vehicle certification bodies referencing electrical performance and safety tests for lighting control devices. Practical applications include ensuring reliable turn‑signal/hazard operation, compatibility with trailer circuits, and resistance to vibration, overload and temperature extremes.
