This International Standard specifies the functional requirements of a range of high-pressure pipes for use on benches for the testing and setting of fuel injection pumps intended for diesel engines. Only dimensions and requirements affecting the hydraulic characteristics of the pipes are specified. Other requirements, such as the type of end connections or shape of the pipes when bent, are not included as these depend on the connections provided on the pump outlets and injector inlets, and on the design features of individual pumps and test benches. This International Standard applies to a range of pipes to enable the pump engine manufacturer to choose a suitable type of pipe for pump deliveries up to 300 mm3/stroke/cylinder. The particular pipe to be used shall be identified by the pump manufacturer in the test schedule for each individual pump type and application.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4093:1999 – Diesel engines - Fuel injection pumps - High-pressure pipes for testing is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This standard specifies the functional requirements and dimensions of high-pressure pipes used on test benches for testing and setting fuel injection pumps designed for diesel engines. ISO 4093:1999 focuses exclusively on geometric and hydraulic characteristics of the pipes, ensuring consistent and reliable conditions during pump testing processes.
By providing clear requirements and dimensional standards, ISO 4093:1999 supports engine and pump manufacturers in selecting appropriate testing pipes, contributing to the quality and consistency of diesel fuel injection systems worldwide.
Key Topics
- Scope of Standardization: Defines a range of high-pressure pipe types solely based on dimensions and requirements influencing hydraulic performance during testing of fuel injection pumps.
- Hydraulic Characteristics: Specifies internal and external dimensions, length, and recommended bend radii to maintain optimal fluid dynamics during pump testing.
- Material and Finish: Requires pipes to be made from steel tubes specified under ISO 8535-1, with smooth, corrosion-free internal bores to ensure no damage occurs to the fuel injection pump system during use.
- Handling and Identification:
- Pipes must be properly washed internally after fabrication.
- Pipe ends should be sealed for storage to prevent internal corrosion.
- Proper identification tags or clips displaying the ISO designation are recommended for traceability.
- Non-included Aspects: The standard intentionally does not cover end connection types, pipe shapes when bent, or other pump/bench-specific adaptations, as these rely on individual system requirements.
Applications
ISO 4093:1999 applies primarily to the automotive and diesel engine industry, particularly for:
- Engine Manufacturers: Enables the selection of standardized pipes for reliable and repeatable testing of diesel fuel injection pumps, improving performance assessment and quality control.
- Fuel Injection Pump Manufacturers: Helps identify suitable pipe types for each pump’s specific delivery requirements (up to 300 mm³/stroke/cylinder), specified in test schedules.
- Test Bench Fabricators: Provides guidelines for the integration of high-pressure pipes, supporting versatility for various pump designs and production demands.
- Quality Assurance and Maintenance: Ensures that all testing and calibration of diesel injection systems utilize pipes that do not introduce hydraulic anomalies, contamination, or premature wear.
By adhering to ISO 4093:1999, industry stakeholders optimize the accuracy, repeatability, and fairness of fuel injection pump testing processes, directly supporting emissions compliance, engine durability, and customer satisfaction.
