This document specifies the braking test methods for ISO 4210‑2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4210-4:2023 - Cycles - Safety requirements for bicycles - Part 4: Braking test methods specifies the standardized braking test methods used to verify compliance with the braking requirements of ISO 4210‑2. This second edition updates and refines test procedures for lever geometry, actuation forces, strength, braking performance (track and machine methods) and brake heat resistance. The document is intended to ensure consistent, reproducible evaluation of bicycle braking systems for safety, durability and performance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and references: Test methods are provided to support the requirements in ISO 4210‑2; terminology follows ISO 4210‑1.
- Brake lever grip dimensions: Gauge-based measurements and pass/fail checks for lever types A, B and C (methods for fitting gauges and measuring distance a).
- Position of applied force: Defined test force application points (e.g., b ≥ 25 mm or dimension a depending on lever type) used for strength and performance tests.
- Strength and security tests:
- Brake-block / brake-pad assemblies security: Tests on a fully assembled bicycle with a combined mass of 100 kg, actuating levers at 180 N and applying forward/rearward movements.
- Hand-operated system strength: Repeated lever loading (450 N or until lever meets limits) applied 10 times.
- Back‑pedal brake strength: Vertical pedal load up to 1 500 N maintained for 1 minute.
- Braking performance:
- Track test method: Indoor preferred; ambient temperature 20 °C ±10 °C, track gradient ≤ 0.5 %, surface friction ≥ 0.75, wind ≤ 3 m/s. Instrumentation accuracy requirements: speedometer ±5 %, velocity recorder ±2 %, distance recorder ±1 %. Water spray system specs for wet tests (nozzle flow ≥ 4 ml/s).
- Machine test method: Laboratory dynamometer-based performance measurement (includes rolling resistance and cooling requirements in this edition).
- Linearity, braking distance calculations and instrumentation described; Annex A explains least-squares line fitting for linearity limits.
- Heat-resistance (drag) test: Procedures to expose brakes to repeated energy cycles and measure performance after heating.
- Informative annexes: Annex A (line fitting), Annex B (measuring braking distance with different lever forces), Annex C (deriving total braking energy).
Practical applications and users
- Bicycle manufacturers and component suppliers - for design validation, type testing and production quality control.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies - to perform standardized braking evaluations and compliance testing.
- Product safety engineers and R&D teams - to benchmark braking performance, durability and thermal behaviour.
- Regulators and procurement specialists - to reference accepted test methods when specifying safety requirements.
