ISO 4223-1:2017 defines a number of significant terms related to pneumatic tyres used in the tyre industry, together with corresponding codes, symbols and values. NOTE 1 For other terms used in this field and their equivalents in other languages, see ISO 3877 (all parts). For terms and definitions relating to wheels/rims, see ISO 3911. NOTE 2 Annex A forms a normative part of this document.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4223-1:2017 - Definitions of some terms used in the tyre industry - Part 1: Pneumatic tyres, is an international standard that provides authoritative terminology, symbols and codes used throughout the pneumatic tyre sector. Published by ISO in 2017 (fifth edition), this document standardizes key words and units for tyre design, testing, labelling and specification so manufacturers, OEMs, test laboratories and regulators speak the same technical language.
Key topics and technical content
The standard clarifies a wide range of tyre-related concepts and measurement conventions, including:
- Service description elements: load index (LI) and speed symbol (SS) as part of tyre identification (e.g., 91H).
- Categories of use: normal tyres, special-use (POR), snow tyres (M+S), severe snow use identified by the 3‑Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) symbol, temporary spare (T-type), reinforced/extra-load, NHS (Not for Highway Service), traction and run‑flat tyres.
- Structural definitions: radial, diagonal (bias-ply), and bias‑belted constructions; carcass, plies, cords, belts and breakers.
- Main components: tread, sidewall, bead, inner liner, rim protector, tread groove and tread wear indicators.
- Dimensional and performance terms: section width, overall diameter, aspect ratio, rolling circumference, tyre contact area, tyre ground pressure, rolling resistance and rolling resistance coefficient.
- Units and measurement: pressure in kilopascals (kPa), contact area in m², rolling resistance in N·m/m (or N).
- Normative Annex A: contains authoritative tables and values for loads, speed categories and rim diameters referenced in the definitions (see Tables A.1–A.4).
ISO 4251-4 is cited as a normative reference for some classification and nomenclature details.
Practical applications - who uses ISO 4223-1:2017
- Tyre manufacturers and designers: ensure consistent use of terminology in product specifications, drawings and labelling.
- Automotive OEMs: match tyres to vehicle requirements using standardized load/speed codes and dimensions.
- Testing and certification bodies: apply common definitions when reporting performance (rolling resistance, test pressure, retread status).
- Regulators and standards committees: reference uniform definitions for legislation and regional approvals.
- Aftermarket suppliers, technicians and trainers: improve clarity in maintenance, fitment and consumer guidance.
- Translators and technical authors: use the standard to align multilingual equivalents (see ISO 3877 for broader term translations).
