La présente Norme internationale définit des méthodes, des procédures et des appareils pour le mesurage manuel de la température des quantités de pétrole et de produits pétroliers. La méthode préférée est l'utilisation d'un thermomètre électronique portable, décrit dans l'article 7. Les autres méthodes sont des thermomètres installés à demeure pour la mesure ponctuelle et pour la détermination de la température par échantillonnage qui utilisent des thermomètres à godet, des thermomètres à éprouvette, et des thermomètres avec prélèvement conventionnel d'échantillon dans les réservoirs conformément à l'ISO 3170. La présente Norme internationale exclut les thermomètres moyenneurs qui appartiennent à des système de jaugeage automatique. Ces derniers sont décrits dans l'ISO 4266. Dans un certain nombre de pays, certains des éléments couverts par la présente Norme internationale, voire tous, sont soumis à une réglementation obligatoire; il convient d'observer la réglementation avec rigueur dans ce cas.
