Specifies methods for taking samples of manganese ores to be used at the places of dispatch and acceptance of ores for determining the chemical composition and moisture content of a consignment. The methods are applicable to both the manual and mechanical sampling of natural or processed ores. Details of the hammer and shovel method are given in the annex.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4296-1:1984 - "Manganese ores - Sampling - Part 1: Increment sampling" defines standardized methods for taking representative increment samples of manganese ores at dispatch and acceptance points. It covers both manual and mechanical sampling of natural or processed ores, and sets rules for obtaining samples used to determine chemical composition and moisture content of consignments. The standard also includes an annex with the hammer-and-shovel procedure for sampling large lumps (>100 mm).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Procedures for increment sampling to create gross samples, subsamples and final samples for chemical and moisture analysis. Applicable at loading/unloading, stockpiles, wagons, ships and bunkers.
- Sampling procedures: Systematic sampling with a random start; two‑stage and stratified sampling for wagons/trucks; stopped‑belt sampling and continuous stream sampling.
- Increment mass and frequency: Minimum increment masses and required numbers of increments depend on maximum particle size, consignment mass and the desired sampling precision. Tables in the standard specify minimum masses and numbers for manual and mechanical sampling.
- Mechanical sampler requirements: Devices must travel uniformly, have sufficient capacity (filled to no more than two‑thirds), a cutting aperture at least three times the maximum particle size, and be designed for cleaning and checking.
- Manual sampling tools: Specifications for shovels, probes and hammer/shovel techniques (with dimensions given for increment shovels and a detailed probe description).
- Quality variation and precision: Classification of quality variation (small, medium, large) based on standard deviation of increment measurements; definitions of sampling precision and overall precision and guidance on determining the number of increments to meet precision targets.
- Sample handling: Rules to avoid contamination, protection of samples, and combining increments into gross samples; requirements for moisture samples and samples for chemical analysis.
Applications and users
ISO 4296-1 is intended for:
- Mining companies and ore processors conducting routine dispatch and acceptance sampling of manganese ores
- Quality control and laboratory personnel preparing samples for chemical and moisture analysis
- Logistics operators and port/rail/ship terminal staff responsible for loading/unloading consignments
- Third‑party inspectors, traders and buyers/sellers needing a standardized, auditable sampling method to resolve quality disputes
Practical benefits include improved representativity of samples, traceable sampling procedures for contracts, and reduced bias in assay and moisture determinations.
