This document establishes a general classification of bridge and gantry cranes and their mechanisms based on the service conditions, mainly expressed by the following: a) total number of working cycles to be carried out during the specified design life of the crane; b) the load spectrum factor which presents the relative frequencies of loads to be handled; c) the average load displacements.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4301-5:2025 - "Cranes - Classification - Part 5: Bridge and gantry cranes" defines a general, cycle-based classification framework for bridge and gantry cranes and their mechanisms. The standard classifies cranes according to service conditions expressed by the total number of working cycles (C) over design life, the load spectrum factor (K) (relative frequencies of handled loads), and average load displacements. It updates the first edition and aligns bridge/gantry crane classification with the cycle-based approach in ISO 4301‑1:2016.
Key topics and requirements
- Group classification: Specifies minimum group classes (A) for whole cranes and guidance on selecting classes of utilization (U) and state of loading (Q) when cycle data are unknown.
- Mechanism classification: Mechanisms (hoist, trolley traversing, crane travelling) are classified in accordance with ISO 4301‑1; Annex A provides conversion guidance from time‑based to cycle‑based mechanism classes.
- Average displacement calculations: Methods for estimating average hoist, trolley and runway displacements when specific data are not available (e.g., hoist average displacement typically ≈ half the lifting range).
- Load spectrum factor: Uses the load spectrum factor to reflect the relative frequency of different load sizes in the duty cycle.
- Minimum durations of use: Provides minimum full‑load durations for mechanisms in typical usages (examples from Table 3):
- Ship unloader: hoist 12 500 h, traversing 3 200 h, travelling 6 300 h
- Container handling/terminal cranes: hoist 3 200 h, traversing 3 200 h, travelling 3 200 h
- Workshop/intermittent use: hoist 800 h, traversing 400 h, travelling 800 h
- Symbols and terms: Defines main symbols (C, h_ave, t_ave, v_ave, U, Q, A) and references ISO vocabularies for consistent terminology.
Practical applications and users
ISO 4301-5 is intended for:
- Crane manufacturers and designers - to select appropriate class ratings and design life assumptions.
- Purchasers and specifiers - to define duty class, load spectra and average displacements in technical specifications and procurement contracts.
- Structural/mechanical engineers and safety assessors - to size components, plan maintenance and perform life‑cycle analysis based on cycle counts.
- Asset managers and maintenance planners - to set inspection intervals and replacement schedules aligned with mechanism classifications.
- Certification bodies and inspectors - to verify compliance with crane classification criteria.
The standard helps ensure consistent specification of service conditions, supports reliable component selection, and improves lifecycle risk management for bridge and gantry cranes.
