ISO 4310:2009 specifies tests, inspections and procedures for verifying the conformance of a crane with its operational specifications and capability to lift rated loads (see ISO 7363). ISO 4310:2009 is applicable to the types of cranes designated in ISO 4306-1, prior to first use following manufacture or after modification or repair of the load‑bearing structure or a component of an individual crane. Where rated loads are governed by stability, a test procedure and test load are specified that permit stability margins to be easily verified.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4310:2009 - "Cranes - Test code and procedures" defines standardized tests, inspections and procedures to verify that a crane conforms to its operational specifications and can safely lift its rated loads. It applies to crane types defined in ISO 4306-1 and is intended for use prior to first use after manufacture and after modification or repair of load‑bearing structures or components. The standard specifies conformity checks, visual inspections and load lifting tests (static, dynamic and stability) and requires documented test reports.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Applies to cranes before first use and after structural modification/repair.
- Addresses situations where rated loads are governed by stability and prescribes verifiable stability test procedures.
- Types of tests
- Conformity tests: verify parameters such as crane mass, hook approaches, lifting/lowering speeds, travel and slewing speeds, cycle times, and function of limiting/indicating/safety devices. Measurements reference ISO 11629 (mass) and ISO 13202 (velocity/time).
- Visual inspections: check mechanisms, electrical/hydraulic systems, safety devices, steel structures and connections, hooks, ropes, sheaves and guarding without unnecessary dismantling.
- Load lifting tests:
- Static tests: demonstrate lifting capability and structural integrity; typical test load = 1.25 P (P = rated capacity) and load lifted 100–200 mm and suspended (min. 10 min unless otherwise specified).
- Dynamic tests: verify functioning of mechanisms and brakes under repeated starts/stops and mid-air starts; typical dynamic loads include 1.25 P at reduced speeds and 1.1 P for motion-specific tests.
- Stability tests: check overturning resistance; static loading 100–200 mm above ground for at least 5 min; for most cranes test load = 1.25 P (mobile cranes follow Annex A rules).
- Mobile cranes (Annex A)
- Provides stability test-load multipliers and formulas, e.g. on outriggers/crawlers: 1.25 P + 0.1 Fi; on wheels stationary: 1.33 P + 0.1 Fi; travelling speeds over 0.4 m/s: 1.5 P + 0.1 Fi. Where jib/fly‑jib masses are high, stability may be verified by calculation.
- Test conditions & reporting
- Test setup, equipment and wind limits (≤ 8.3 m/s) are specified. A formal test report must identify the crane, test date/location, supervisor and detailed findings (loads, positions, procedures, results).
Applications and users
ISO 4310 is used by:
- Crane manufacturers and vendors (factory acceptance testing, final inspections)
- Purchasers and owners (site acceptance testing)
- Inspection bodies, maintenance teams and safety auditors
- Certification bodies and regulatory authorities
- Operators and test supervisors responsible for commissioning, post‑repair validation and safety compliance
Practical benefits include standardized acceptance criteria, improved safety of lifting operations, consistent verification of rated capacities and clear test documentation for legal and contractual compliance.
