Methods for the determination of the following characteristics of the test pieces after washing are specified: intrinsic greying, intrinsic yellowing, increase in organic deposit content, increase in incineration residue, overall decrease in breaking strength, decrease in breaking strength resulting from chemical degradation of cellulose due to laundering and from mechanical factors in laundering. Annexes contain the determination of increase (or decrease) in degree of whiteness and of chemical wear and further a grey scale and the measurement of reflection.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4312:1989 - "Surface active agents - Evaluation of certain effects of laundering - Methods of analysis and test for unsoiled cotton control cloth" - defines laboratory methods to measure how laundering processes and surfactant formulations affect standardized unsoiled cotton control cloth. The standard specifies procedures for assessing visual and physical changes after controlled wash cycles (e.g., intrinsic greying/yellowing, deposits, ash, and strength loss) so laundries, detergent manufacturers and test laboratories can compare laundering effects reproducibly.
Key Topics
- Intrinsic greying: Method for measuring the decrease in luminance (degree of whiteness) caused by redeposition of soils or dye staining, with procedures that exclude fluorescent whitening agent (FWA) effects.
- Intrinsic yellowing: Measurement of yellowing independent of UV-induced fluorescence.
- Organic deposit content: Determination of increase in organic residues deposited on the control cloth during laundering.
- Incineration residue (ash): Quantification of inorganic residue increase after washing.
- Breaking strength (total wear): Measurement of overall decrease in tensile strength of the control cloth (strip method, warp direction).
- Chemical wear vs mechanical wear: Procedures to separate strength loss due to chemical degradation of cellulose from mechanical abrasion in laundering.
- Chemical degradation measurement: Annex methods for assessing chemical wear by changes in viscometric polymerization - both ammonium copper(II) hydroxide (viscometry) and copper(II) di(ethylenediamine) (Cuen) solutions are provided.
- Reflectance and grey scale: Annexed guidance for measuring degree of whiteness and using grey scales / reflectometers to standardize optical assessments.
- Test reporting and specimen selection: Guidance on sampling from test pieces, conditioning and reporting to ensure comparability.
Applications
- Quality control and process verification in industrial laundries to detect redeposition, staining or excessive textile wear.
- Product development and performance testing for detergent and surfactant manufacturers, including assessment of bleaching and soil-suspending performance.
- Textile testing laboratories and conformity assessment bodies performing comparative evaluations of laundering methods, machines, water hardness effects or formulation changes.
- Research into textile durability and laundering-induced cellulose degradation.
Practical benefits include standardized, reproducible comparisons of laundering variables and a means to isolate chemical vs mechanical effects on cotton textiles. Note: results on unsoiled cotton control cloth are primarily comparative; they may not directly predict behavior of textiles with different fibers, finishes or constructions.
