A clear solution of the substance is titrated with a standard volumetric hydrochloric acid solution, in the presence of methyl orange or bromophenol blue as indicator. This method is only applicable when so indicated in the specific standard for each product; in particular, it is not suitable for products containing soaps.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4315:1977 specifies a titrimetric method for determining the alkalinity of surface active agents. This internationally recognized standard describes a precise laboratory procedure where a clear aqueous solution of the surface active agent is titrated with a standardized volumetric hydrochloric acid solution. The titration uses either methyl orange or bromophenol blue as the pH indicator to identify the endpoint.
The method is specifically designed for use when stipulated by product-specific standards and is not suitable for products containing soaps. Surface active agents, which often include organic substances prone to hydrolysis, can exhibit weak alkalinity due to the presence of compounds such as carbonates, bicarbonates, hydroxides, or organic bases like triethanolamine.
Key Topics
- Purpose: Measurement of alkalinity in surface active agents to ensure product quality and compliance.
- Scope: Applicable to substances excluding those containing soap; used when product-specific standards require.
- Principle:
- Preparation of a clear solution of the agent.
- Titration with 0.1 N hydrochloric acid solution.
- Use of methyl orange or bromophenol blue as indicators.
- Sample Preparation: Laboratory samples must be weighed accurately to 0.001 g precision and dissolved in distilled or equivalent purity water.
- Equipment: Standard laboratory glassware including 250 ml conical flask and 10 ml burette meeting ISO specifications.
- Calculation: Alkalinity expressed as percentage by mass of sodium oxide (Na₂O) using the volume of acid consumed.
- Documentation: Test reports should include identification details, test conditions, method references, and result expression format.
Applications
The ISO 4315:1977 standard is widely used in the chemical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and detergent industries where surface active agents are critical ingredients. Its practical value lies in:
- Quality Control: Ensuring consistent alkalinity of surfactant products, which can affect stability and efficacy.
- Regulatory Compliance: Meeting international and national standards that require specific alkalinity limits.
- Product Development: Assisting laboratories in formulating and adjusting surface active agents by monitoring alkalinity levels.
- Research: Providing a reliable titrimetric method for the analysis of organic surfactant substances prone to hydrolysis and weak alkalinity.
