ISO 4317:2011 specifies two titration methods (volumetric and coulometric) using Karl Fischer reagent for the determination of the water content of surface active agents and detergents. These methods are applicable to products in the form of powders, pastes and solutions. They are applicable only if so indicated in the specific standard for each product. As alkaline compounds react with Karl Fischer reagent, the methods give values which are too high in the case of samples containing alkali metal silicates, carbonates, hydroxides or borates. Therefore, samples need to be analysed for the presence of such alkali metal salts prior to the determination of the water content.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4317:2011 - "Surface‑active agents and detergents - Determination of water content - Karl Fischer methods" specifies two Karl Fischer titration methods (volumetric and coulometric) for measuring water content in surface‑active agents and detergents. The standard applies to products in the form of powders, pastes and solutions, and is intended for use only where the specific product standard indicates. It covers principle, reagents, apparatus, test procedures, expression of results, precision data and reporting requirements.
Key technical topics and requirements
- Test methods:
- Volumetric titration (recommended for samples with ≥ 2% water; usable down to ~0.1%): uses standardized Karl Fischer reagent (iodine + SO2 + base) and a piston burette titrator.
- Coulometric titration (recommended for ≤ 0.1% water; usable up to ~2%): electrochemically generates iodine and measures charge required to reach endpoint.
- Reagents and standards: use analytical‑grade reagents and grade 2 distilled water (per ISO 3696). Primary standards: disodium tartrate dihydrate or oxalic acid dihydrate (or known weighed water).
- Solvents: typical solvents include methanol, 2‑methoxyethanol, propan‑1‑ol. For aldehydes/ketones, non‑reactive solvents such as trichloromethane/dichloromethane or propylene carbonate may be used (with health‑and‑safety warnings).
- Apparatus essentials: volumetric titrator with double platinum electrode, 20 mL piston burette, drying tubes, titration vessel, magnetic stirrer, high‑precision balance (0.1 mg). Coulometric setup requires an electrolytic cell with separated anode/cathode chambers, detector and automatic titration electronics.
- Limitations: samples containing alkali metal silicates, carbonates, hydroxides or borates react with Karl Fischer reagent and give falsely high water values - such salts must be checked for before analysis.
- Quality and reporting: reagent titre must be checked (on new containers and periodically); precision data and interlaboratory results are provided in the standard’s annexes. Test report must note reagent type (e.g., pyridine vs non‑pyridine) and any solvent deviations.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses ISO 4317:2011: analytical chemists, QC/QA laboratories in detergent and surfactant manufacturing, formulation scientists, contract testing labs, and regulatory bodies assessing product specifications.
- Applications: routine moisture/water content determination for raw materials, intermediates and finished detergent/surfactant products; specification compliance, shelf‑life assessment, process control and troubleshooting of product stability or drying operations.
