Cancels and replaces the second edition (1985). Specifies the following characteristics and requirements for a general purpose three-pin electrical plug connector with earth contact for use with a single solenoid: the electrical characteristics of the connector; the dimensions of the pins and earth contact; the means for fixing the socket to the plug; the sealing procedure between the plug and the socket; usage requirements. The electrical plug connector specified herein is intended to be used under working conditions where the connector cannot be damaged by external action.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4400:1994 is an international standard specifying the characteristics and requirements for three-pin electrical plug connectors with earth contact, primarily designed for use in fluid power systems and components. This standard applies to connectors used with a single solenoid in hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Replacing its 1985 predecessor, the third edition introduces updated temperature ranges, sealing procedures, and additional technical requirements to ensure reliability and safety in industrial electrical connections.
This connector type is designed for general-purpose applications where electrical continuity, mechanical protection, and environmental sealing are crucial. The standard ensures consistent dimensions, electrical characteristics, and mechanical fastening methods, making ISO 4400-compliant connectors suitable for fluid power control components exposed to demanding operational conditions.
Key Topics
-
Electrical Characteristics
- Rated voltage: 250 V
- Rated current: 10 A, with current variation allowances at elevated temperatures from -40 °C to +125 °C
- Insulation and dielectric strength requirements per IEC 309-1
-
Connector Dimensions and Components
- Standardized pin and earth contact sizes and positions to maintain interoperability
- Four pins total: three main pins (including auxiliary pin) and one earth contact pin longer than the others to ensure grounding before power connection
- Pin arrangement and marking to prevent incorrect wiring
-
Mechanical Fixing and Sealing
- Use of an M3 screw to securely fasten the socket to the plug
- Flat sealing to meet IP65 protection class, preventing dust and fluid ingress between connector components
- Provision for a protective cover plate to guard against mechanical damage under working conditions
-
Usage and Safety Requirements
Applications
ISO 4400 connectors are widely used in fluid power systems involving hydraulic and pneumatic controls, including:
-
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Control Units
- Connecting electrical solenoids controlling hydraulic valves or pneumatic actuators
- Systems requiring dependable electrical connections to maintain safe and accurate component actuation
-
Industrial Machinery
- Equipment operating in environments where electrical connections may face dust, fluids, or mechanical stress
- Applications needing connectors rated for IP65 sealing and temperature extremes
-
Electrical Control Interfaces
- Signal and power connections where earth contact safety must be prioritized
- Auxiliary functions requiring additional pins for tasks such as indicator lamps or stroke limiters
By adhering to ISO 4400, manufacturers and users ensure compatibility, safety, and longevity of plug-and-socket connectors in fluid power electrical controls.
