Provides guidance in the form of check-lists for the surveying and setting-out services that may be required during the development and construction of buildings and ancillary works. This first edition together with ISO 4463-1 and ISO 4463-2 replaces ISO 4463:1979, which has been technically revised.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4463-3:1995 - Measurement methods for building - Setting-out and measurement - Part 3: Check-lists for the procurement of surveys and measurement services provides practical guidance, in the form of check-lists, for the specification and procurement of surveying, topographic and setting-out services during building development and construction. Published in 1995, this part is one of three in the ISO 4463 series and, together with ISO 4463‑1 and ISO 4463‑2, replaces ISO 4463:1979.
Key topics and requirements
- Procurement check‑lists for surveying and measurement services tailored to each construction phase:
- Phase 1: Acquisition of a parcel or existing building
- Phase 2: Project establishment (site and building detail surveys)
- Phase 3: Pre‑construction (coordination drawings, utility mapping)
- Phase 4: During construction (setting‑out, verification, monitoring)
- Phase 5: Completion (as‑built surveys and final documentation)
- Survey deliverables and procedures: identification of parcels, site plans, control stations, reference grids, levels, and detailed drawings for coordination and setting‑out.
- Movement monitoring: guidance to agree methods, frequency, precision and reporting when monitoring settlements, deformations or adjacent‑structure movements is required.
- Drawing scales and dimensional accuracy: recommended drawing scales with associated dimensional accuracy examples (e.g., 1:500 ≈ 0.1 m; 1:100 ≈ 25 mm; 1:50 ≈ 12 mm) to help specify acceptable tolerances for topographic drawings.
- Documentation and storage: requirements to identify locations for storing survey records and to provide final implementation drawings and network coordination.
- Informative annex: Annex A illustrates cotation and setting‑out from common secondary reference lines to ensure consistency between design dimensions and site setting‑out.
Practical applications
- Use ISO 4463-3:1995 to prepare clear procurement specifications and tender documents for surveying and setting‑out services.
- Establish consistent check‑lists to reduce ambiguity in scope, tolerances and deliverables across project phases.
- Support quality control during construction by defining verification, re‑check and movement monitoring procedures.
- Harmonize design drawings and site setting‑out by prescribing reference networks and drawing scale/accuracy relationships.
Who should use this standard
- Surveyors and geospatial consultants
- Architects and design teams
- Contractors and site engineers
- Project managers and procurement officers
- Local authorities and building control bodies
