ISO 4499-3:2016 gives guidelines for the measurement of microstructural features in Ti(C,N) based hardmetals and WC/Co hardmetals that contain additional cubic carbides by metallographic techniques only using optical or electron microscopy. It is intended for sintered hardmetals (also called cemented carbides or cermets) containing primarily inorganic carbides and nitrides as the hard phase. It is also intended for measuring the phase size and distribution by the linear intercept technique.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4499-3:2016 - "Hardmetals - Metallographic determination of microstructure - Part 3" provides practical guidelines for measuring microstructural features in Ti(C,N) based cermets and WC/cubic carbide hardmetals. The standard is focused on metallographic techniques using optical microscopy or electron microscopy to quantify phase size and distribution in sintered hardmetals (cemented carbides, cermets). It specifies use of the linear intercept technique (mean linear intercept / Heyn method) and links to related measures such as equivalent circle diameter and area counting.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and materials: Ti(C,N) cermets and WC/cubic carbide hardmetals, including materials with core–rim grain structures and additional cubic carbides (e.g., TiC, TaC).
- Definitions and size classes: Size categories are defined by mean linear intercept (e.g., nano < 0.2 µm, ultrafine 0.2–0.5 µm, submicron 0.5–0.8 µm, fine 0.8–1.3 µm, medium 1.3–2.5 µm, coarse 2.5–6.0 µm, extra coarse > 6.0 µm).
- Measurement principle: Use of linear intercepts to derive number averages of phase size; alternatives include area counting and equivalent circle diameter (refer to ISO 4499-2).
- Metallographic preparation: Follow ISO 4499‑1 for sectioning, mounting, grinding and polishing (final polish recommended with colloidal silica). Specific etching methods for Ti(C,N) and WC/cubic systems are outlined.
- Apparatus and resolution: Optical microscope or SEM; SEM (preferably field-emission SEM) recommended for ultrafine/nano structures; TEM may be needed for the smallest features.
- Calibration and image acquisition: Images must be calibrated to a stage micrometer traceable to national standards; match imaging conditions for calibration and samples.
- Sampling and procedure: Guidance on representative image selection, homogeneity checks, intercept measurement protocols, uncertainty estimation and test reporting.
Applications and users
- Quality control and production monitoring in cemented carbide manufacturing
- Materials characterization in metallurgy and materials science research
- Failure analysis and lifetime assessment of cutting tools, wear parts, and cermet components
- Laboratory accreditation and method harmonization for industrial labs performing microstructure measurement and grain/phase size analysis
Typical users: metallurgists, materials engineers, QA/QC laboratories, academic researchers, and standards/inspection bodies.
