Overview
ISO 4531:2022 - Vitreous and porcelain enamels - Release from enamelled articles in contact with food - Methods of test and limits - specifies a simulated migration test and limits for metal‑ion release from enamelled surfaces intended to contact food. The standard applies to enamelled articles (including tanks and vessels) used for preparation, cooking, serving and storage of food. It provides test reagents, apparatus, sample preparation, test conditions and how results must be reported.

- Surface/volume (S/V) ratio: a reference S/V ratio of 5 dm⁻¹ is used; mathematical recalculation is specified if different S/V is tested.
- Analytical methods: inductively coupled plasma (ICP) spectrometry with a limit of detection at least six times lower than the release limits; alternative equivalent techniques (e.g., AAS/GF) permitted.
- Apparatus and samples: borosilicate glassware, PTFE components, silicone gaskets and defined test cells are specified; laboratory sample typically comprises four test plates or two identical articles. Cleaning and handling procedures are prescribed.
