Specifies a test method which is used as a factory production control test. The test is not intended to be used for testing the adhesion of the enamel. Annexes A and B are for information only.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4532:1991 specifies a factory production control pistol test to determine the impact resistance of vitreous and porcelain enamels on enamelled articles. The method assesses the enamel’s sensitivity to localized mechanical impact and identifies the lowest striking load that produces visible damage. The test is explicitly not intended for measuring enamel adhesion. Annex A (calibration/zeroing) and Annex B (bibliography) are informative.
Key topics and requirements
- Test principle: A spring‑loaded striker with a 5 mm steel ball is fired against the enamel surface; the first visible enamel damage at the impact point (crack, powdering, flaking, or metal tear) defines the sensitivity.
- Apparatus: Spring‑actuated pistol device with adjustable spring load (readable externally; internal adjustment from 0 to about 90 N). A soft rubber pad and convex front accessory are described for supporting different shapes.
- Procedure:
- Fix the article on a suitable support and perform shots at separate locations (minimum 20 mm between impacts).
- Start at 10 N and increase in 10 N steps until the highest 10 N multiple that does not produce visible damage is found, then increase in 2 N steps until first visible damage appears.
- Perform at least five shots per specimen and test a minimum number of specimens as agreed between supplier and buyer (if none, test at least two).
- Initial inspection is immediate; final evaluation is made 24 hours later. Surface marking from the striker alone is not considered damage.
- Calibration and accuracy: The standard includes an informative annex on device calibration and zero determination; allowed reading error for the instrument’s operating range should not exceed 3%.
- Reporting: Test reports must reference ISO 4532 and include specimen description, number of specimens and tests, support type, impact locations, spring load (to ±2 N), observed damage, and any high‑voltage test used.
Applications and users
- Quality control and factory production control for manufacturers of enamelled cookware, appliances, industrial tanks, sanitaryware and enamelled metal panels.
- Coating engineers, QC laboratories, suppliers and purchasers who need a standardized, repeatable method to compare impact sensitivity of enamelled articles.
- Useful when specifying acceptance criteria in production contracts or inspection protocols (note: separate adhesion tests are required if adhesion is the property of interest).
