Abstract
Overview
ISO 4548-4:1997 specifies standardized test methods for measuring the initial particle retention efficiency, life, and cumulative efficiency of full‑flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines using the gravimetric method. It defines test rig configuration, test liquids, test contaminants, sample preparation and procedures, and reporting requirements so manufacturers, test laboratories and engine OEMs can consistently assess filter performance (single‑pass retention and particle‑holding life).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Test scope: Initial single‑pass (instantaneous) retention efficiency and life/cumulative efficiency determined gravimetrically (mass of insolubles).
- Test rig essentials: pulse‑free pump; pressure and flow control valves; flow meter (≈2% accuracy); thermostatically controlled sump/heater; slurry addition reservoir (≈½ filter volume ±25%); filtrate receptacle (≈4× filter volume); vertical mounting of filter element.
- Test liquids & conditions: straight mineral oils ISO VG 100 (SAE 30) or ISO VG 150 (SAE 40) used at a kinematic viscosity of 24 mm²/s ±3 mm²/s (about 74 °C for VG100, ~83 °C for VG150).
- Test contaminant: fused aluminium oxide test dust per ISO 12103‑2 grades (ISO 12103‑M2 to M5) with mean particle sizes ~6.9 μm, 13.6 μm, 30.1 μm and 54 μm. Dust must be dried (105 °C ±5 °C for ≥1 h), mixed into oil slurry and stirred at high speed for ≥1 h immediately before use.
- Cleanliness and rig blank: rig must be cleaned so test fluid contaminant ≤ 60 mg/l. A 50 ml sump sample (rig blank) is taken and used to correct results.
- Procedures & reporting: procedures cover slurry preparation, controlled injection into main flow, sampling for gravimetric analysis and calculation/reporting of retention, life and cumulative efficiency. Annexes include parameter tables and methods for determining insolubles and mixing equipment details.
Applications and users
- Filter manufacturers: product development, quality control, validation of element designs and media changes.
- Automotive, heavy‑duty engine OEMs and suppliers: component specification, supplier acceptance testing and comparative performance evaluation.
- Independent test laboratories and certification bodies: standardized performance testing for procurement, warranty disputes and conformity claims.
- R&D and tribology engineers: understanding single‑pass efficiency in the critical 5–40 μm wear size range and predicting filter life.
