This document specifies a method of testing the ability of full-flow lubricating oil filters manufactured with metal pressure vessel materials for internal combustion engines to withstand an internal pressure surge. Normally surges occur when an engine is started from cold, and cyclic internal pressure variations experienced during operation. These tests are intended for application to spin-on type filters and detachable filters with disposable elements. The tests can be applied to other filters, if thought applicable, by agreement between the filter manufacturer and the purchaser. NOTE This test is not intended to replace simulated environmental testing (e.g. at very low temperatures). If such testing is required, it will be the subject of negotiation between the supplier and customer.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4548-5:2020 defines a standardized method to evaluate the hydraulic pulse durability of full‑flow lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. The standard specifies how to simulate internal pressure surges (for example, cold‑start spikes and cyclic pressure pulses during operation) so that spin‑on and detachable filters with disposable elements can be assessed for canister and seal integrity under repeated internal pressure cycling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Intended for filters made with metal pressure vessel materials; can be applied to other types by agreement between manufacturer and purchaser. Not a substitute for extreme environmental testing (e.g., very low temperature).
- Test rig and waveform: Provides a typical circuit (accumulator, pump, valves, pressure sensor) and a representative pulse waveform. Cycle rate is normally 0.5–2 Hz unless otherwise agreed.
- Test fluid and temperature: Use oil with viscosity class ISO VG 22; temperature 60 °C ± 10 °C (note kinematic viscosity reference at 63 °C).
- Instrumentation and accuracy: Pressure, time and temperature measurement accuracy requirements are specified (pressure ±5 %, time ±0.002 s, temperature ±1 °C; test condition variation for temperature ±2 °C). Pressure transducers and recording equipment must have combined frequency response 0–2 kHz with amplitude ratio within 0 dB to −3 dB.
- Test procedure: Fit filter to manufacturer torque/angle, purge air, set accumulator and relief pressures, initiate cyclic pressure pulses and run until failure or agreed number of cycles. Record cycles to failure and inspect failure mode/location.
- Reporting and statistics: Test report must include filter ID, test conditions (pressure, cycle rate, temperature, fluid), mode/location of failure, and cycles to failure. For multiple samples calculate mean, standard deviation and - when >7 samples - B10 life via Weibull analysis (ISO 19973-1 referenced).
- Default test values: Annex A gives default pressure and cycle counts by filter category (e.g., Spin‑on light duty: extreme 1 000 kPa / 1 000 cycles; normal 500 kPa / 25 000 cycles) for cases with no manufacturer agreement.
- Validation: Annex B summarizes round‑robin results used to verify the procedure.
