Overview
ISO 4581:1994 specifies a gas chromatography (GC) method for determining residual acrylonitrile monomer in styrene/acrylonitrile (SAN) copolymers and blends. The main procedure dissolves a polymer test portion in dimethylformamide (DMF), adds a known amount of propionitrile (or acetonitrile) as an internal standard, and injects the solution into a GC with a flame ionization detector (FID) to separate and quantify volatile components. The method yields a typical detection limit of about 3 ppm acrylonitrile; Annex A describes an alternative headspace GC procedure using a thermionic nitrogen detector for much lower detection limits (approximately 0.3–0.4 ppm).
