ISO 4611:2010 specifies the conditions of exposure of plastics to damp heat, water spray, salt mist, and the methods for the evaluation of the change in some significant characteristics after given exposure stages. It is, in general, suitable for all plastics in the form of standard test specimens, and finished articles or parts thereof. It considers separately methods for the determination of change in mass, change in dimensions and appearance, change in physical properties.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4611:2010 - Plastics: Determination of the effects of exposure to damp heat, water spray and salt mist - defines test conditions and evaluation methods for assessing how plastics respond to humid, wet and saline environments. The standard applies to standard test specimens and finished articles or parts, and describes procedures to measure change in mass, change in dimensions and appearance, and change in other physical properties after specified exposure stages. ISO 4611:2010 is intended for laboratory environmental testing, material aging studies and quality assurance of plastic products.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and principle: Specifies controlled exposure to damp heat, water spray and salt mist, with before-and-after measurements of selected properties. Results can be reported after drying or reconditioning when required.
- Equipment requirements:
- Chambers built from corrosion-resistant materials and able to program exposure cycles.
- Sensing devices (temperature, relative humidity) located in the working volume; continuous drainage of condensate.
- Water resistivity for humidity control ≥ 0.05 MΩ·cm.
- Cabinets for spray/mist tests: minimum volume 0.4 m³ to ensure homogeneous spray distribution.
- Atomizer system with filtered compressed air and approx. 70 kPa overpressure; compressed air pre-humidified by a saturation tower at ~10 °C above cabinet temp.
- Environmental controls to prevent condensed droplets falling on specimens.
- Temperature and humidity control:
- Chamber temperature control tolerance ±2 °C.
- Preferred steady-state damp heat: 40 °C and 93 % RH (ramp limits and timing specified).
- Cyclic test options with upper temperatures of 40 °C or 55 °C and specified numbers of cycles.
- Spray and salt mist specifics: Requirements for spray generation, salt mist concentration/deposition monitoring, and recommendations for treating salt-mist effluent for environmental protection.
- Test specimen conditioning and reporting: Conditioning, measurement intervals (recommended exposure periods such as 12, 24, 48, 96, 240 h), and standardized expression of results.
Applications and who uses it
- Materials R&D and failure analysis: Evaluate hydrolytic degradation, plasticizer exudation, moisture uptake and dimensional stability.
- Quality control and type approval: Verify product performance for marine, automotive, electrical/electronic, and outdoor applications where salt mist, water spray, or damp heat are relevant.
- Test laboratories and OEMs: Plastics manufacturers, independent test labs, design engineers, and compliance officers use ISO 4611:2010 to define test programs and compare materials. Note: ISO 4611 provides reproducible laboratory data; a direct correlation to field service life should not be assumed without additional assessment.
