This document specifies a method of preparing samples from vulcanized rubber for use in chemical tests.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4661-2:2018 - "Rubber, vulcanized - Preparation of samples and test pieces - Part 2: Chemical tests" specifies accepted methods for preparing samples of vulcanized rubber for chemical analysis. The standard ensures test portions are representative of the material under investigation and gives prescriptive preparation routes for different rubber forms (soft vulcanized rubber, ebonite and rubberized composites). It is part of the ISO 4661 series and is intended for laboratories, manufacturers and material analysts performing chemical tests on vulcanized rubber.
Key topics and requirements
- Representative sampling: Emphasizes that samples must reflect the desired property or constituent (e.g., include surface bloom when composition of original mix is required, or remove bloom for bulk composition).
- Avoid contamination and heat: Mechanical separation (blades, abrasive wheels, files) is preferred and heat generation should be avoided to prevent alteration of chemical composition.
- Soft vulcanized rubber: Comminute to pass a sieve of approximately 1.7 mm (scissors, rotating rasp, grinder, cryogenic crushing), or sheet to a thickness ≤ 0.5 mm on cold, tightly closed rolls. Type of grinder is immaterial provided no contamination/overheating.
- Ebonite: Rasp to powder passing an approximately 400 μm sieve; treat powder with a magnet to remove iron particles.
- Rubberized composites: Where mechanical separation is not possible, expose the rubber to solvent vapour only (for NR, SBR, BR: acetone or ETA - ethanol–toluene azeotrope). Keep exposure short to avoid extracting plasticizers. Remove solvent in air at room temperature and then treat as soft vulcanized rubber. If separation is impossible, cut material into small cubes to pass a 2 mm sieve and analyse the composite as a whole; determine rubber proportion by disintegration in a hot high‑boiling solvent and weighing, noting possible partial dissolution of other organic components.
- Reporting: Document and report the method of separation used; state when analysis is of a heterogeneous blend and caution about inhomogeneity errors.
- Safety/environment: The 2018 revision replaces chlorinated solvents with less hazardous solvents.
Applications and users
- Quality control and routine chemical analysis in rubber manufacturing and compound formulation.
- Third-party testing laboratories performing solvent-extract and compositional tests.
- Failure analysis and forensic material investigations of vulcanized rubber products.
- R&D and material characterization for automotive, industrial, seal and hose manufacturers.
- Regulatory and compliance testing where accurate chemical composition data is required.
