Abstract
Overview
ISO 4683-1:1998 - Raw sheep skins: Part 1 - Descriptions of defects defines and describes the range of visual and structural defects that can occur on raw sheep skins. Prepared by ISO/TC 120 (Leather), Subcommittee SC 1, this part applies to fresh and cured sheep skins (air-dried, wet-salted, dry-salted) and also lists defects that may appear during or after tanning even when not visible on raw skins. The standard is intended to provide a common vocabulary for inspection, grading and trade of ovine hides.
Key topics
- Defect categories
- Ante-mortem defects (occur before slaughter): e.g., abscesses/cysts, dermatophilosis (lumpy wool), heat sores, greasy skin, hyper‑pigmentation, poor wool crimp, pin‑holes, rib marks, ectoparasite damage (mites, lice, ticks, pox, sarcoptic and psoroptic mange).
- Post-mortem defects (during/after slaughter and skinning): e.g., butcher score/strain, grain cracks, holes and shearer cuts, patches of fat or flesh, poor pattern/deformation.
- Preserving defects (related to storage/preservation): e.g., blood stains, break-outs from drying, dermestes and moth larvae damage, mildew, rancidity, salt pitting, microbial colouring, iron stains.
- Scope of application: Covers defects on both wool‑on and skinned/sheepskins and notes defects specific to wool-on skins (fibre weaknesses, wool slips, wool staining).
- Terminology and descriptions: Gives standardised definitions and visual descriptions to support consistent grading and communication across the supply chain.
Applications and users
- Tanneries and leather processors use ISO 4683-1 for incoming inspection, sorting and process planning (anticipate tanning problems such as grain erosion or dyeing issues).
- Hide and skin graders, abattoirs and auction houses apply the defect descriptions for quality control, classification and commercial transactions.
- Buyers, specifiers and quality managers rely on standardized defect vocabulary to compare lots, write contracts and set acceptance criteria.
- Training and certification: Useful for inspector training, inspection checklists and dispute resolution on quality claims.
Practical value
- Enables consistent reporting of sheepskin quality and defect causes.
- Helps predict processing/economic impact (e.g., areas likely to weaken after tanning).
- Improves traceability and decision-making for preservation, storage and handling.

- ISO 4683 series: Part 2 - Designation and presentation (complements Part 1).
- Developed under ISO/TC 120 Leather, the series supports harmonised trade and technical communication in the leather and sheepskin sectors.
