ISO 4796-1:2016 specifies a series of screw-neck bottles suitable for the storage of fluid liquid and solid chemicals and reagents in general laboratory use. These bottles with nominal volumes ranging from 25 ml to 20 000 ml are also suitable for the preparation and storage of microbiological growth media.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 4796‑1:2016 - Laboratory glassware - Bottles - Part 1: Screw‑neck bottles specifies a standardized series of screw‑neck laboratory bottles for the storage and preparation of chemical reagents, fluids and microbiological growth media. The standard covers nominal capacities from 25 ml to 20 000 ml (20 l) and defines construction, material, dimensions, closures and marking to ensure safe, interchangeable laboratory glassware.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Capacities and dimensions: Nominal volumes include 25, 50, 100, 150, 250, 500, 750 ml, 1 l, 2 l, 3.5 l, 5 l, 10 l, 15 l and 20 l. Dimensions and tolerances for heights, diameters and wall thicknesses are specified so bottles are consistent and compatible across manufacturers.
- Material: Bottles shall be made of clear, colourless or amber borosilicate glass 3.3 in accordance with ISO 3585, minimizing internal stress and visible defects to reduce the risk of fracture from thermal or mechanical shock.
- Construction and design:
- Stable base and smooth transition radii between base, side, shoulder and neck.
- Cylindrical side for 25 ml–2 000 ml; slightly tapered side for 3.5 l–20 l.
- Reinforced neck with a pouring lip or permitted clip‑on anti‑trip ring.
- Even glass distribution with minimum wall thicknesses per capacity class.
- Optional protective plastic coating that must resist steam sterilization at 135 °C.
- Closures: Closures of inert plastics (e.g., polypropylene) that form a liquid‑tight seal; closures must be marked with maximum permitted temperature (e.g., “max. 100 °C”).
- Marking and designation: Bottles must be marked with nominal capacity, maker/vendor identification and the standard reference (ISO 4796‑1). Designation example: “Laboratory bottle ISO 4796‑1 - 500”.
- Safety note: During sterilization, closures should not be screwed more than one turn to allow pressure release.
Practical applications
- Standardizing laboratory storage containers for chemical reagents, solvents and microbiological media.
- Ensuring interchangeability of bottles and closures across suppliers for procurement and inventory control.
- Supporting safe sterilization practices and reducing risk of glass fracture during thermal cycles.
- Useful in research labs, QA/QC in industry, clinical and microbiology laboratories, chemical storage facilities, and educational labs.
Who should use ISO 4796‑1
- Glassware manufacturers and product designers
- Laboratory managers and procurement specialists
- Quality assurance and compliance teams
- Standards committees and testing laboratories
